Madrid's Mbappé dependency causing concern among Spanish pundits

La Tribu panelists debate Real Madrid's over-reliance on Kylian Mbappé while Barcelona flies high, with only a single point separating the rivals in La Liga.

Spanish football pundits are raising the alarm over Real Madrid’s growing dependency on Kylian Mbappé, despite Los Blancos sitting just one point behind Barcelona in the title race.

Mbappé: Madrid’s saviour or problem?

On Radio MARCA’s La Tribu program, journalist Irene Junquera voiced what many Madrid fans have been thinking: “What worries me about Madrid is what happens on the day Mbappé isn’t there.”

The discussion highlighted a curious paradox in Madrid’s season:

  • Real Madrid are grinding out results despite underwhelming performances
  • Barcelona are flying high but only lead by a single point
  • Madrid’s attacking threat appears concentrated in Mbappé while other forwards struggle

Javier Tintó offered a particularly interesting statistical observation, noting that Madrid aren’t actually scoring more goals since Mbappé’s arrival. Instead, the Frenchman seems to be absorbing the goal contributions that previously came from other players.

“When Cristiano arrived at Madrid, they started scoring about 30 more goals per season,” Tintó pointed out. “With Mbappé’s arrival, Madrid are actually scoring fewer goals than before.”

A one-point gap that feels wider

The panel seemed to agree that the current standings don’t tell the full story. Despite just a single point separating the two Spanish giants, the perception is of a Barcelona side in full flow against a Madrid team struggling for identity.

Amalio Moratalla described seeing “Barcelona on a streak, flying; and Madrid suffering,” suggesting the one-point difference “isn’t the reality” of the gap between the teams.

Ricardo Sierra added that Madrid simply doesn’t give supporters “that reliability” right now, planting seeds of doubt despite their lofty position.

The Mbappé factor

While no one questioned the Frenchman’s individual brilliance, there were concerns about how the team functions around him. Tintó summed up this dichotomy neatly: Mbappé may be “the best player in the world individually, but collectively, no.”

As Barcelona continue their impressive form and Madrid rely increasingly on their French superstar, the coming weeks could prove decisive in determining whether Los Blancos can find the collective strength to complement their individualistic approach.
