Oso blow for Sevilla as injury crisis deepens

Joaquín Martínez 'Oso' faces 4-5 weeks on the sidelines with a calf injury as Sevilla's treatment room fills up further following their clash with Girona.

Sevilla’s treatment room is getting more crowded than the Northern Line at rush hour as academy product Joaquín Martínez ‘Oso’ becomes the latest casualty in what’s turning into a proper injury nightmare for Matías Almeyda.

Calf injury sidelines standout performer

The club’s medical team has confirmed that Oso suffered a contusive myoaponeurotic injury to the internal calf muscle of his left leg during Sunday’s match against Girona at the Sánchez-Pizjuán. The young defender, who was Sevilla’s best outfield player after coming on as a second-half substitute, now faces a spell on the sidelines.

Oso himself took to social media to express his frustration, revealing the expected recovery timeline and his annoyance that the challenge which caused the injury didn’t even result in a booking: “4-5 weeks and not even a yellow… whatever.”

Growing injury list

The academy graduate joins a concerning list of crocked players at Sevilla:

  • Marcao
  • Adnan Januzaj
  • Rubén Vargas
  • Castrín

There was some positive news for Almeyda before the Girona match with Nianzou and Azpilicueta returning to the squad. The latter started against Míchel’s side but was substituted at half-time.

Blow to team dynamics

Losing Oso is particularly painful for Sevilla as he made a significant impact after coming on against Girona, changing the team’s approach and creating their best chances. His absence for over a month will force Almeyda to reshuffle his defensive options at a crucial point in the season.

With the injury list growing longer than a goalkeeper’s arms, Sevilla’s gaffer has got his work cut out to keep the team competitive while his treatment room resembles the Royal London Hospital.
