Villarreal reject £30m bid for Carlos Romero as they plan for his homecoming
The Yellow Submarine have turned down a massive offer for their on-loan left-back Carlos Romero, with plans to make him a cornerstone of next season's squad.
Villarreal have knocked back a £30 million offer for their loanee Carlos Romero, with the club seeing the left-back as a crucial part of their future plans.
The Romero Roadmap
The 24-year-old from Torrent has been turning heads during his second consecutive loan spell at Espanyol, where he’s established himself as one of La Liga’s top performers in his position. While several big clubs have been sniffing around, Villarreal’s message to potential suitors couldn’t be clearer - he’s not for sale.
In fact, the Yellow Submarine were so adamant about keeping their man that they refused to even negotiate when a £30m bid landed on their desk in January. For anyone still interested, they’ll need to cough up the full £45m release clause - proper Bobby Moore money, that.
Replacing a Club Legend
Romero won’t feature in the upcoming Villarreal-Espanyol clash due to loan conditions, but his future is firmly tied to La Cerámica. The plan is crystal clear:
- Alfonso Pedraza is leaving for Lazio this summer
- Romero will return as his direct replacement
- One homegrown left-back making way for another
The youngster will step into a high-pressure environment with European football and twice-weekly matches - exactly the platform needed for the next stage of his development.
Contract Situation
Despite renewing his Villarreal contract until 2029 last summer before rejoining Espanyol, the club recognises those terms no longer reflect his sporting reality. His value has skyrocketed, and his status has grown beyond that of a mere academy product.
As Espanyol manager Manolo recently noted: “He’s performing as one of the best left-backs around right now.”
International Potential
Espanyol’s sporting director Fran Garagarza deserves credit for Romero’s development, having previously worked similar magic with Marc Cucurella at Eibar. The left-back has contributed four goals and two assists this season, showing his attacking prowess.
Manolo believes Romero’s ceiling is incredibly high: “If he doesn’t get complacent, he has the level to improve even more.” The gaffer even suggested that if Romero were at a bigger club like Atlético or Real Madrid, he’d already be in the Spain squad.
Villarreal certainly agree - they’ve seen enough to know they’ve got a diamond on their hands, and they’re not about to let him go for anything less than top dollar.
