Carvajal and Arbeloa Hold Clear-the-Air Talks at Valdebebas

Real Madrid captain Dani Carvajal and manager Álvaro Arbeloa meet face-to-face to resolve tensions after controversial Valencia benching

Real Madrid captain Dani Carvajal and manager Álvaro Arbeloa have held crucial talks at Valdebebas training ground following a brewing storm over the defender’s continued absence from the starting lineup.

The Summit

After Sunday’s victory against Valencia at Mestalla, both parties wasted no time addressing the elephant in the room. The meeting, which reportedly took place in a relaxed atmosphere, saw both men exchange views without any hostility – a positive step towards resolving what had become an increasingly awkward situation.

The summit comes after Carvajal’s visible frustration boiled over at Mestalla, where cameras caught him gesticulating animatedly to fitness coach Antonio Pintus after the match. And fair play to him – the skipper had every right to be proper narked.

The Mestalla Flashpoint

What triggered this dust-up? At Valencia, Carvajal wasn’t just benched again, but:

  • Academy product David Jiménez was selected ahead of him in the starting XI
  • When Jiménez was substituted, it was Trent who came on instead
  • This despite Trent only just returning after two months on the treatment table

For a player of Carvajal’s status – a proper Madrid legend with trophy cabinets that need reinforcing – this was a bitter pill to swallow.

The Bigger Picture

The situation has been bubbling away for weeks. Since returning from knee surgery in January (a procedure to remove loose cartilage from his right knee that kept him sidelined for 74 days), Carvajal’s game time has been severely limited:

  • 10 consecutive matchday squads
  • Only 27 minutes of actual playing time across just two matches (Albacete and Monaco)
  • Eight games as an unused substitute, including the Valencia match

Meanwhile, Arbeloa has preferred using Federico Valverde at right-back during Trent’s absence, rather than easing his captain back into action.

Arbeloa’s Position

When questioned about Carvajal’s situation after the Valencia match, Arbeloa insisted he wouldn’t “take any risks” with the defender’s fitness, adding that Carvajal was improving in training and would soon regain importance in the team.

With this summit now having taken place, both men will hope to have found common ground. For Madrid fans, seeing two club legends at odds was becoming a right old barney that nobody wanted.
