Cubarsí fires warning shot to Atlético ahead of Copa clash

Barcelona's teenage defensive sensation Pau Cubarsí believes the Catalans are hitting top form at the perfect time before their Copa del Rey semi-final first leg in Madrid.

Barcelona’s young defensive star sends confident message to Atlético Madrid ahead of Thursday’s Copa del Rey semi-final first leg.

‘We’re in top form’

Pau Cubarsí isn’t mincing his words before Barcelona’s massive cup tie against Atlético Madrid. The teenage defender, who’s been an absolute revelation since breaking into the first team, reckons the Blaugrana are hitting their stride at just the right moment.

Speaking to TV3, the centre-back made it crystal clear that Barça are feeling proper confident after their Supercopa triumph over Real Madrid last month.

“We’re in a very good level and we have to continue like this,” said the La Masia graduate, who’s showing maturity well beyond his years both on the pitch and in front of the microphones.

Cup ambitions

The young lad made no bones about Barcelona’s ambitions in the knockout tournament. Since their January Supercopa success against their bitter rivals, Hansi Flick’s side have been on a proper tear, dropping points only once in La Liga against Real Sociedad.

Cubarsí emphasized that the squad is buzzing about their Copa prospects:

  • The competition offers a quick route to silverware
  • Barcelona want a positive result in Madrid
  • They’re focused on winning the first leg, not thinking about the return match
  • The Supercopa victory has given them a psychological boost

Supercopa springboard

That 3-2 victory over Los Blancos in the Supercopa final seems to have been a real turning point for Flick’s men. Since lifting that trophy, they’ve been playing with the sort of swagger that’s got Barcelona fans dreaming of more silverware this season.

The German gaffer has got his team firing on all cylinders, and young talents like Cubarsí are stepping up to the plate. For a squad that had its fair share of doubters at the start of the campaign, they’re certainly making the Atleti clash look like it could be a right Bobby Moore.

Thursday’s first leg at the Metropolitano promises to be a proper tasty affair between two sides who rarely disappoint when they lock horns.
