Eibar finding their feet with the 'English average' formula

Despite being the only Segunda División side without an away win, Eibar's home form and recent defensive stability have pulled them clear of relegation trouble.

SD Eibar might be the only team in Spain’s Segunda División without an away win this season, but their recent formula of home victories coupled with road draws has steadied the ship just when they needed it most.

The Basque outfit have found their rhythm through what Spaniards call the ‘media inglesa’ (English average) - winning at home and drawing away - a strategy that’s helping them climb away from relegation danger.

Home comforts at Ipurua

While their away drought continues after 12 road trips without victory this campaign, Eibar’s home form has been nothing short of brilliant:

  • Four consecutive wins at their Ipurua fortress
  • Solid defensive displays limiting opposition chances
  • Recent victories over promotion-chasing Almería and Sporting

This home reliability has been the foundation of their recovery, providing crucial points while they struggle to find winning form on their travels.

Defensive solidity the key

The transformation has been built on defensive discipline rather than attacking flair. Manager San José has clearly focused on shoring up the backline first and foremost:

  • Only three goals conceded in their last eight matches
  • Away performances prioritizing defensive structure
  • A stark contrast to November’s worrying run when individual errors led to a leaky defence

While their attacking output away from home remains below par, the newfound defensive stability has given them a platform to build from.

The English formula working wonders

The ‘media inglesa’ approach - a concept deeply rooted in Spanish football culture - refers to winning home games while drawing away. It traditionally delivers 1.5 points per match on average, enough to keep teams comfortably mid-table.

For Eibar, recent draws at Granada and Zaragoza, combined with their impeccable home form, have seen them climb into mid-table security after flirting with the drop zone earlier in the campaign.

Their next challenge is a proper Bobby Dazzler - hosting the league leaders this Sunday. But with their current Ipurua form, they’ll fancy their chances of another home win to complement last Saturday’s hard-earned point at La Romareda.
