Januzaj returns to training as Sevilla prepare for Alavés clash
The Belgian winger rejoins Sevilla's squad after a month out with hamstring issues, while Rubén Vargas faces 4-5 weeks on the sidelines with a calf injury.
Sevilla received a welcome boost as Adnan Januzaj returned to training ahead of this weekend’s crucial home fixture against Alavés, providing manager Matías Almeyda with additional attacking options.
Januzaj back in the fold
The Belgian winger has been absent for approximately a month with right hamstring problems, having last featured in Sevilla’s match against Celta Vigo. His return comes at a crucial time as Los Nervionenses look to bounce back from their disappointing showing against Girona last time out.
Januzaj’s season has been frustrating thus far, with the former Manchester United man managing just 11 appearances in all competitions. Despite taking a wage cut last summer to remain at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán, injuries have continued to hamper his progress. He has, however, contributed two goals in Copa del Rey action.
Almeyda previously described Januzaj as a “player who was underground” and “a great person who needs to be spoken to and given confidence” - suggesting the gaffer sees untapped potential in the Belgian if he can stay fit.
Injury concerns remain
While Januzaj’s return is positive news, Sevilla still have several players in the treatment room:
- Marcao - continuing rehabilitation
- Andrés Castrín - still sidelined
- Oso - unavailable
- Rubén Vargas - the latest casualty with an internal calf injury to his left leg
Vargas confirmed on social media that he’ll be out of action for 4-5 weeks following an injury sustained from a challenge during the Girona match. Proper Bobby Dazzler of a blow for Almeyda’s squad depth, that.
Looking ahead to Alavés
Sevilla have three more training sessions scheduled before Saturday’s La Liga fixture against Alavés at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán (18:30 local time). The Andalusians will be desperate for three points to improve their position in the table.
Almeyda is set to address the media on Friday in his pre-match press conference, where he’ll likely provide further updates on the squad’s fitness and his plans for the match.
