Jesé's 90-minute curse: The wall the Las Palmas striker can't break through

Former Real Madrid wonderkid Jesé Rodriguez has yet to complete a full match for Las Palmas this season, despite being one of their key goalscorers.

Despite being one of Las Palmas’ key attacking threats this season, Jesé Rodriguez finds himself battling a peculiar statistic – he hasn’t played a full 90 minutes in any of his 16 appearances this campaign.

The Incomplete Man

The former Real Madrid wonderkid’s season has been defined by this curious limitation. Whether starting from the bench or being tactically substituted, Jesé constantly finds himself racing against the clock. His longest stint on the pitch came against Real Sociedad B, where he managed 73 minutes – still well short of the full match experience.

The numbers tell a story of carefully managed minutes:

  • 549 total minutes across 16 matches
  • 9 appearances as a substitute
  • 7 starts, but never completing the full 90

The pattern began understandably, with his first eight appearances coming off the bench during what appeared to be a fitness adaptation period. Once Luis García deemed him ready for the starting XI, Jesé responded with goals, seemingly cementing his place.

Tactical Decisions or Something More?

However, the manager’s selection policy has raised eyebrows among the Las Palmas faithful. Two weeks ago, the decision to bench Jesé against Córdoba left many supporters scratching their barnets. García later explained it was part of a tactical approach, suggesting Jesé “would be important in the second half” for their high-pressing game plan.

While he returned to the starting lineup for the away match at Zubieta and again versus Córdoba, the pattern of early exits continued. His substitution for Iker Bravo against Burgos particularly riled the Gran Canaria crowd, who made their displeasure known with a chorus of boos directed at the dugout.

García remained philosophical about the fan reaction, noting that “whistles are part of the profession” and defending his decision by explaining that Bravo could offer more in aerial situations.

The Elusive Full Match

For Jesé, despite his goals and overall contribution, the reward of a complete 90-minute performance remains tantalizingly out of reach. Whether it’s fitness concerns, tactical decisions, or something else entirely, the former wonderkid continues to operate with one eye on the substitution board.

As Las Palmas push on in Segunda División, the question remains whether Jesé will finally break through this peculiar barrier or if his season will continue to be defined by partial appearances.
