Jhon Durán's Russian Roulette: Four clubs in 12 months as Colombian's career spins out of control

From Premier League prospect to Saudi outcast to Turkish troublemaker and now Russia - tracking the chaotic year of Aston Villa's £25m man Jhon Durán.

The Colombian striker who burst onto the Premier League scene is now embarking on his fourth club in just 12 months, with disciplinary issues and burned bridges following him across three continents.

Villa’s explosive talent turns nomad

When Aston Villa splashed nearly £25m on Jhon Durán from Chicago Fire in January 2023, they thought they’d bagged a proper diamond. The Colombian looked the business initially under Unai Emery, notching seven Premier League goals despite limited minutes.

But what’s followed has been nothing short of a circus, with the 20-year-old bouncing between clubs faster than you can say “Adam and Eve” (believe).

The Saudi experiment gone wrong

After impressing in flashes at Villa, Durán was shipped off to Al Nassr for a whopping £65m. Despite scoring 12 goals in 18 appearances, his time in Saudi Arabia quickly turned sour.

Reports of clashes with Cristiano Ronaldo and disciplinary problems led to an acrimonious exit. The Al Nassr president didn’t mince his words, claiming Durán’s behaviour was “unprofessional” and that he’d negotiated with other clubs without permission.

Turkish troubles

Next stop: Turkey and Fenerbahçe, where his agent boldly claimed he was “the best U21 striker in the world”. The timing couldn’t have been worse - he arrived just as José Mourinho departed.

Five goals and three assists in 1,130 minutes later, Durán was again making headlines for the wrong reasons. The final straw came when he refused to shake manager Domenico Tedesco’s hand after a 4-0 win over Konyaspor.

Russian reset?

Now Durán finds himself at Zenit Saint Petersburg, his fourth club in a chaotic year. The welcome hasn’t exactly been warm, with former Zenit player Denis Ugarov publicly questioning the signing.

His new manager Sergey Semak is taking a more optimistic view, hoping World Cup ambitions with Colombia might motivate the wayward talent: “We don’t doubt his quality.”

The numbers don’t lie

Durán’s career statistics since leaving Villa tell a story of unfulfilled potential:

  • 4 clubs in 12 months
  • 39 appearances
  • 17 goals
  • 3 assists

For a lad with undeniable talent, it’s turning into a proper cautionary tale. The question now is whether Russia will be where he finally sorts himself out, or just another chapter in an increasingly bizarre career trajectory.
