Kroos Takes Cheeky Swipe at Obi Mikel in Twitter Mix-up

Toni Kroos fired back at supposed criticism from John Obi Mikel that turned out to be fake news, with Dani Ceballos jumping in to defend his teammate.

Toni Kroos has shown he’s still got that cutting German wit even off the pitch, responding to viral ‘quotes’ from John Obi Mikel that turned out to be complete cobblers.

The Phantom Criticism

The German maestro responded to supposed comments from the former Chelsea midfielder that had been doing the rounds on social media. The fake quotes portrayed Mikel questioning how “mediocre” players like Nacho had won multiple Champions League trophies.

Kroos wasn’t having any of it, firing back with the absolute zinger: “And why didn’t you play for Real Madrid?”

Talk about a proper shutdown! The only problem? Mikel never actually said anything of the sort.

Setting the Record Straight

This isn’t the first time dodgy quotes have been attributed to the Nigerian international. Back in 2024, similar fabricated comments surfaced before the Champions League final against Borussia Dortmund, with Mikel supposedly criticizing several Madrid players.

Mikel was quick to set things straight on his podcast ‘The Obi One’, making it crystal clear he’d never disrespect players of that caliber:

  • He called Modric, Carvajal, Kroos and Nacho “world-class players” and “Real Madrid legends”
  • He even suggested Carvajal could be a Ballon d’Or candidate
  • He emphasized how mental it would be to question players who’ve won six Champions League titles

Adding Fuel to the Fire

Despite Mikel’s denial, the saga took another twist when Madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos reposted the fake quotes alongside Kroos’s response, adding: “Sorry, but Toni Kroos is unique.”

This unnecessary stirring of the pot by Ceballos has only kept the non-story bubbling along, when it should’ve been put to bed ages ago.

Mikel’s Actual Pedigree

While he might not have played for Los Blancos, Obi Mikel had a proper career in his own right:

  • Spent 11 seasons at Chelsea as a key defensive midfielder
  • Won two Premier League titles and four FA Cups
  • Lifted the Champions League in 2012 and Europa League
  • Captained Nigeria to African Cup of Nations glory in 2013

Not too shabby for a player who built his reputation on being a physical, no-nonsense midfielder with a specific tactical role. Different type of player to Kroos, but certainly not one to be sniffed at.
