Navarro's dream coming true at Athletic as Copa semi-final against former club looms
Robert Navarro opens up about his successful adaptation to Athletic Bilbao ahead of facing his former club Real Sociedad in the Copa del Rey semi-final.
The 23-year-old midfielder has been a revelation for Athletic Bilbao this season, contributing seven goals and three assists while establishing himself as a key figure in Ernesto Valverde’s squad.
From La Real to Athletic success
Robert Navarro’s journey to San Mamés has been anything but straightforward. After coming through Barcelona’s youth system, he made the bold move to Monaco before landing at Real Sociedad. Subsequent loan spells at Cádiz and Mallorca preceded his summer transfer to Athletic, where he signed a long-term contract until 2030.
Now, as Athletic prepare to face his former employers Real Sociedad in the Copa del Rey semi-finals, Navarro is relishing the opportunity, telling MARCA: “I’ve fought for a dream that is gradually being achieved.”
Adapting to Valverde’s system
Navarro has seamlessly integrated into Athletic’s squad despite the tactical differences from his previous clubs:
- He’s accumulated nearly 1,400 minutes across all competitions
- Scored in both La Liga and Champions League
- Provided crucial assists, including one that led to an own goal in the Copa
The transition wasn’t without challenges. “I came from two years at clubs where we played deeper and didn’t press as high or engage in as many one-on-one duels,” Navarro explains. However, his technical qualities have shone through as he’s adapted to Valverde’s more intense approach.
Family sacrifice behind the success
Navarro’s football education has been nomadic – starting in Pamplona, touching base at Osasuna, then Barcelona, Monaco, and beyond. Behind this journey lies significant family sacrifice.
“My parents and my entire family have made many sacrifices for me. I’ve lived with my grandparents. Everything has been about fighting for a dream, and little by little, we’re seeing the results,” he reflects.
Copa semi-final focus
With Athletic hosting Real Sociedad in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final, Navarro is fully focused on the task at hand. “The first priority is the home leg at San Mamés. With our supporters, we need to play a great match to try and win here,” he insists.
The midfielder’s versatility – capable of playing centrally or wide – gives Valverde valuable tactical options for the crucial derby clash. His ability to impact games whether starting or coming off the bench could prove decisive in Athletic’s push for Copa glory.
