Sporting's winter signings making waves despite Cuenca injury setback

Ferrari and Cuenca impressed on their debuts as Sporting Gijón's winter transfer business pays early dividends, though the young defender now faces a spell on the sidelines.

Borja Jiménez’s winter recruitment drive is already bearing fruit as Sporting Gijón climb back into promotion contention.

Ferrari roars on full debut

The Molinón faithful were treated to a proper Bobby Dazzler last weekend as Sporting dispatched Huesca to reconnect with the promotion-chasing pack. The victory showcased the club’s shrewd January business, with Uruguayan forward Andrés Ferrari stealing the show.

Given his first start due to Juan Otero’s suspension, Ferrari didn’t half take his chance with both hands:

  • Netted his maiden goal in red and white with a clinical first-time finish
  • Demonstrated impressive anticipation in the box
  • Linked play effectively throughout
  • Left the pitch to rapturous applause from the home crowd

The South American looked right at home and provided exactly the cutting edge Sporting have been crying out for this season.

Cuenca impresses before injury blow

Equally eye-catching was young defender Andrés Cuenca, who formed a baby-faced central defensive partnership with Diego Sánchez – giving Sporting a centre-back pairing with an average age of just 20.

The Barcelona academy graduate showed why he was so highly rated at La Masia:

  • Displayed natural leadership despite his tender years
  • Demonstrated robust defending when required
  • Showcased his Barcelona DNA with composed distribution

However, what started as a dream debut turned sour when Cuenca collapsed clutching his leg after feeling a sharp pain. The defender’s pained expression and need for medical assistance to leave the pitch had already set alarm bells ringing before Tuesday’s confirmation of the bad news.

Month on the sidelines

The club has confirmed that Cuenca suffered a hamstring injury in his left leg that will keep him out of action for approximately 4-5 weeks. It’s a proper kick in the teeth for both player and club after such a promising start.

The young centre-half is already focused on his rehabilitation with an eye on returning for the business end of the season as Sporting push for promotion.

While one winter signing nurses his wounds, the early signs suggest Sporting’s January business could be the difference-maker as they chase a return to the top flight. Sometimes you have to speculate to accumulate, and Jiménez’s gambles appear to be paying off handsomely.
