Bernat's Second Division Surprise: Former PSG Star Joins Eibar

Juan Bernat makes a shock move to Segunda División side Eibar after being clubless since last summer, bringing Champions League pedigree to Ipurua.

Former PSG and Bayern Munich defender Juan Bernat has landed at Segunda División outfit Eibar in one of the more surprising transfers you’ll see this season.

Unexpected winter window coup

The Basque club has pulled off quite the January transfer window shocker by securing the signature of the 32-year-old left-back, who had been without a club since departing Getafe last summer. Bernat has penned a deal until the end of the current campaign with an option for a second season.

The Valencia-born defender has already completed his medical and will immediately join Beñat San José’s squad as the club’s sole winter window acquisition.

Pedigree that stands out in Segunda

Bernat brings a trophy cabinet that’s absolutely stacked by Segunda División standards:

  • 17 official titles across his career
  • 4 Bundesliga championships with Bayern Munich
  • 3 German Supercups
  • 4 Ligue 1 titles with PSG
  • 11 caps for the Spanish national team

That’s some proper pedigree for a club like Eibar - a bit like finding a Rolex in your local Poundland, if you catch my drift.

What he brings to Ipurua

According to Eibar’s announcement, Bernat is described as a “quick left-back with clear offensive qualities and notable ability to arrive in the opposition area, standing out for his depth on the left flank and his ease in providing assists.”

The experienced defender’s journey has taken him through some of Europe’s elite clubs. After coming through Valencia’s youth system and making 74 appearances for their first team, his career path reads like a European football tour: Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Benfica, and Villarreal before his stint at Getafe prior to joining Eibar.

Looking ahead

For Eibar, currently pushing for promotion back to La Liga, adding a player with Champions League and international experience could prove decisive in their promotion push. Bernat’s attacking qualities from the left-back position might just be the missing piece in San José’s tactical setup.
