Castilla set for boost as defensive 'boss' returns from injury
Manu Serrano's comeback after two months on the sidelines could be crucial for Real Madrid Castilla's promotion push and might even open first-team doors.
After a two-month injury layoff that’s seen him miss 10 consecutive matches, Manu Serrano is finally set to return to the Real Madrid Castilla squad for Friday’s crucial clash against Athletic at the Di Stéfano Stadium.
The missing link
Serrano’s absence has been keenly felt by Julián López de Lerma’s side. The versatile defender, who can operate either as a centre-back or left-back, isn’t just valued for his defensive quality but also his leadership as one of the squad’s four captains.
Before his injury setback, Serrano had established himself as a regular starter under previous manager Álvaro Arbeloa, playing a pivotal role during Castilla’s most impressive run of form this season – a streak that propelled them firmly into the promotion playoff positions.
The Serrano effect
The numbers tell a proper story here. Between October and mid-November, Castilla went on a remarkable run of six victories, with one common denominator: Serrano starting at left-back in each triumph. His presence in the team was almost like having money in the bank:
- Started and won against: Ponferradina, Pontevedra, Ourense, Avilés, Talavera and Cacereño
- During this period, Castilla only failed to win twice (Southampton and Mérida) – games where Serrano wasn’t in the starting XI
His impact extended beyond just being on the pitch. Castilla’s defensive record with him in the side was impressive, conceding just three goals across those six victories. Going forward, he contributed two crucial assists – a measured cross against Ourense that César Palacios converted, and another inch-perfect delivery for Álvaro Ginés to head home against Cacereño.
First-team prospects
Serrano’s return couldn’t be better timed, especially with Arbeloa now in charge of the first team. Having been plucked from Real Madrid C by Arbeloa last summer, Serrano has the manager’s complete trust – making a first-team call-up before season’s end a distinct possibility.
It’s been quite the journey for the defender, who spent two challenging seasons with Madrid C after his youth career ended. While many of his peers moved up to Castilla, Serrano was consistently overlooked by former manager Raúl despite being a standout performer at the lower level.
Last season, he featured in 35 matches for Madrid C but managed just five minutes with Castilla on the final matchday. The previous campaign followed a similar pattern – he was instrumental in Madrid C’s promotion under Pau Quesada but received only four minutes of Castilla action.
Now, his patience might finally be rewarded with not just a Castilla comeback, but potentially a crack at the big time.
