Flick's panic stations: Barça boss makes shock 36th-minute sub in Copa nightmare

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick showed his desperation with an ultra-early substitution as Atlético Madrid ran riot in their Copa del Rey semi-final first leg

Barcelona boss Hansi Flick couldn’t even wait for half-time to shake things up as his side were being absolutely battered by Atlético Madrid in their Copa del Rey semi-final first leg.

Desperate times, desperate measures

You know things have gone Pete Tong when a manager makes a tactical substitution before the 40-minute mark. That’s exactly what Flick did at the Metropolitano, with his Barcelona side already three goals down and looking completely at sea.

The German gaffer, clearly fuming at what he was witnessing, yanked Marc Casadó off in the 36th minute to bring on Robert Lewandowski. The young Catalan midfielder had picked up a yellow card, but this was clearly about much more than avoiding a potential sending off.

Flick tried to soften the blow, giving Casadó a hug and some words of explanation as the lad trudged off, but there was no disguising the panic behind the move.

Tactical reshuffle that solved nothing

The substitution triggered a complete positional reshuffle:

  • Ferran Torres shifted to the left wing
  • Dani Olmo moved into the number 10 role
  • Fermín López dropped deeper alongside Frenkie de Jong

But if Flick thought this would stem the bleeding, he was sorely mistaken. The defensive shambles continued, and Julián Álvarez rubbed salt in the wound by adding a fourth Atlético goal in first-half stoppage time.

Historic humiliation

The look on Flick’s boat race as he headed down the tunnel at half-time told the whole story. Barcelona hadn’t been on the wrong end of a four-goal deficit since the 1953-54 season - that’s almost 70 years of history being rewritten in the worst possible way.

Despite their attacking talent, the Blaugrana couldn’t find the net themselves, compounding a defensive display that would make a Sunday League team blush.

Flick’s early substitution gamble backfired spectacularly, leaving Barcelona with a mountain to climb in the return leg if they want to keep their Copa del Rey dreams alive.
