Marcelino set for 200th La Liga match with Villarreal against his favourite punching bag
The Asturian manager reaches another milestone this weekend against Getafe, a club he's dominated throughout his coaching career in Spain's top flight.
Marcelino García Toral is about to chalk up yet another impressive milestone in his storied career with the Yellow Submarine.
Record-breaking gaffer
The Spanish tactician has been smashing records left and right at Villarreal this season. He’s already overtaken Manuel Pellegrini to become the manager with the most matches and most victories in the club’s history. Now, this weekend will see him reach a proper bobby dazzler of a milestone - his 200th La Liga match in charge of Villarreal.
Rather fittingly, this landmark game comes against Getafe - the team that’s practically been his bread and butter throughout his managerial career in Spain’s top flight.
Getafe: Marcelino’s favourite victims
When you look at the numbers, they’re absolutely tasty:
- 15 victories against Getafe in 32 matches across his entire career
- 47% win rate against the Madrid-based side
- If Villarreal win on Saturday at the Coliseum, that percentage jumps to a clean 50%
- Getafe would then officially become Marcelino’s most “punished” opponent
The Asturian manager has faced Getafe while in charge of eight different Spanish clubs including Sporting Gijón, Recreativo, Racing Santander, Zaragoza, Sevilla, Athletic Bilbao, Valencia, and of course, Villarreal.
Impressive Villarreal stats
Marcelino’s record specifically with Villarreal against Getafe is equally impressive, with seven victories to date. That equals his best record against any opponent while managing the Yellow Submarine, tied with Real Sociedad and Espanyol.
Across his 199 league matches with Villarreal so far, Marcelino has accumulated:
- 96 wins (48% win rate)
- 51 draws
- 52 defeats
Expand that to all competitions, and he’s managed Villarreal in a whopping 282 matches. Not too shabby for a gaffer who’s been in and out of the Villarreal hot seat!
If his track record against Getafe is anything to go by, there’s a fair chance he’ll be celebrating win number 97 this weekend. Proper job, that would be.
