From Superliga enemies to unlikely allies: How Florentino and Al-Khelaifi buried the hatchet

The Real Madrid and PSG presidents have repaired their relationship after years of bitter feuding over the European Super League, transfers and club-state ownership.

After years of public spats, boardroom battles and transfer market warfare, football’s odd couple have somehow found common ground. Real Madrid’s Florentino Pérez and PSG’s Nasser Al-Khelaifi are talking again – and not just through their lawyers.

From friends to foes

When Al-Khelaifi rolled into Paris with Qatar Sports Investments in 2011, relations with Madrid were initially cordial. Despite PSG’s newfound wealth and willingness to splash the cash, a gentlemen’s agreement existed between the clubs – a sort of non-aggression pact, if you will.

But several flashpoints turned these power brokers against each other:

  • The Neymar saga: Al-Khelaifi was proper narked when Madrid attempted to approach Neymar without speaking to PSG first
  • State-owned clubs: Florentino actively campaigned against state-backed clubs to UEFA, arguing they created an impossible competitive environment
  • The Mbappé marathon: An eight-year transfer saga that saw PSG snatch Kylian from Monaco ahead of Madrid, then reject a reported €200m offer, only for the player to eventually leave on a free

Super League, super enemies

The relationship hit rock bottom with the European Super League announcement. While Madrid led the charge, PSG refused to join the breakaway competition. Al-Khelaifi quickly filled Andrea Agnelli’s vacant ECA (European Club Association) presidency and aligned himself with UEFA’s Aleksander Ceferin.

The animosity reached theatrical levels:

  • Pérez told an assembly: “We must remind him who Real Madrid is”
  • Al-Khelaifi repeatedly dismissed the Super League as existing “only in the heads of some”
  • A pre-Champions League match directors’ lunch in Paris turned arctic when Florentino arrived 30 minutes late, with the presidents barely exchanging words

The unexpected thaw

But two months ago, something changed. Both presidents realised their ongoing war was damaging everyone involved. Secret negotiations began, with subtle public hints emerging.

The first bread crumb appeared on December 12th when Madrid publicly congratulated PSG on their Intercontinental Cup win – a small gesture that now appears loaded with significance.

Now, in a remarkable turnaround, the same Super League project that drove them apart has somehow brought them back together. Both men worked toward a solution where neither side would lose face.

The relationship has returned to its cordial origins, with Al-Khelaifi even praising Florentino in recent comments – quite the plot twist considering they were at each other’s throats mere months ago.

Football’s strangest bromance? Don’t bet your dog and bone on it just yet, but stranger things have happened in the beautiful game.
