Bordalás buzzing as Getafe's winter recruits help sink Yellow Submarine

Getafe manager José Bordalás was full of praise after his side's impressive victory against Champions League-calibre Villarreal, highlighting the impact of January signings.

The Azulones put in a proper shift at the Coliseum, securing a crucial victory that pulls them further away from the relegation scrap and showcases the positive impact of their January business.

Tactical masterclass

Bordalás couldn’t hide his delight after watching his Getafe side dismantle Villarreal with a performance that was absolutely spot on tactically. The gaffer, forced to watch from the stands, praised his team’s ability to control the game, particularly in a first half where they were “outstanding” both with and without the ball.

The victory marks eight points from their last twelve available - a proper turnaround for a side that was flirting with the drop zone just a couple of weeks back.

Winter reinforcements making their mark

Getafe’s January signings have given the squad a much-needed boost, with their attacking additions already making a difference. Bordalás was particularly chuffed with his new forwards, who despite coming from different leagues and lacking match fitness, have shown tremendous character and commitment.

“They are competitive men who have come with great enthusiasm,” the manager noted, clearly pleased with how quickly they’ve adapted and how warmly they’ve been welcomed by the dressing room.

Three at the back pays dividends

A tactical switch to three central defenders proved inspired, with Djené putting in a proper shift despite playing in an unfamiliar position. The makeshift wing-back eventually had to come off with a soleus issue, but not before contributing significantly to a defensive display that effectively nullified Villarreal’s considerable attacking threat.

Looking ahead

Despite the crucial win, Bordalás remains grounded about Getafe’s position:

  • Two weeks ago they were practically in the relegation zone
  • The current table “means absolutely nothing” at this stage
  • Focus now shifts to preparing for the next “tremendously difficult match”

The victory showcased Getafe at their pragmatic best - compact defensively while still posing a genuine attacking threat. Their high pressing directly led to their second goal, with Juan Iglesias providing the cross for Martín to make it 2-0.

For the Getafe faithful, who’ve had precious little to celebrate in recent weeks, this performance against a Champions League calibre opponent was just what the doctor ordered.
