Fuenlabrada pull off coup with veteran hitman Ángel Rodríguez

Former Getafe and Mallorca striker Ángel Rodríguez drops down to fourth tier with Fuenlabrada, bringing his impressive goalscoring pedigree to Segunda RFEF.

Former La Liga striker and Segunda División goalscoring legend Ángel Rodríguez has made a surprising move to fourth-tier Fuenlabrada, dropping down two divisions in what represents quite the statement signing for the Madrid-based club.

Veteran firepower for relegation battle

The 38-year-old Tenerife-born forward has been without a club since leaving CD Tenerife last July, but now joins Fuenlabrada for the remainder of this season plus one more year. It’s a proper Bobby Dazzler of a signing for a club currently fighting to escape the danger zone in Segunda RFEF.

Fuenlabrada, who dropped down to the fourth tier last summer, have secured a player with serious pedigree. The veteran striker brings with him an impressive CV that includes:

  • 90 goals in 296 Segunda División appearances (seventh highest scorer in the division’s history)
  • Europa League experience with Getafe
  • Top-flight spells with both Getafe and Mallorca
  • A career total of 161 professional goals

Nearly joined Segunda División elite

Ángel’s goalscoring exploits in Spain’s second tier put him just shy of the division’s all-time top five scorers. He sits only one goal behind former teammate Jorge Molina (91) and two behind Toché (92) in the Segunda División scoring charts.

While his final season at Tenerife yielded just one goal in 27 appearances, he notched 10 the previous campaign, showing he still had the scoring touch. Before that, he competed in La Liga with Mallorca after leaving Getafe in 2021.

For Fuenlabrada fans, this signing represents a massive coup. They’ll be hoping the veteran striker still has the scoring boots to help them climb away from danger in Segunda RFEF, as they aim to bounce back from last summer’s relegation disappointment.
