Nico Williams setback: Athletic star to miss Oviedo clash with ongoing injury
The younger Williams brother continues to struggle with pubis problems, sitting out Athletic Club's upcoming trip to the Carlos Tartiere despite recent returns to action.
Athletic Club’s trip to the Carlos Tartiere this Sunday just got a bit more challenging as their star winger Nico Williams has been ruled out with persistent pubis problems.
Injury troubles continue
Just when we thought the younger Williams brother was finding his rhythm again, he’s been forced back to the treatment table. Nico had featured in Athletic’s last four matches - starting two and coming off the bench in the others - but now finds himself watching from the sidelines once more.
The absence of their number 10 will be a proper kick in the teeth for Ernesto Valverde, who would’ve been banking on Williams’ pace and trickery against the Asturian side. The gaffer’s options out wide look considerably thinner without his star man available.
Some positive news
It’s not all doom and gloom for the Basque outfit though. The squad announcement brought some welcome returns:
- Yuri Berchiche is back in contention
- Oihan Sancet has also made the squad list
Both players are likely to start on the bench rather than in the first XI, but having them available gives Valverde some much-needed depth for the journey to Oviedo.
Still waiting on Vivian
Dani Vivian remains unavailable despite training with the group throughout the week. The defender isn’t quite ready for competitive action yet, meaning Athletic will continue with their current defensive setup.
The timing of these injury concerns couldn’t be more frustrating for Athletic, who are pushing hard for European qualification while still competing in the Copa del Rey. Managing Williams’ fitness will be crucial as they balance ambitions across multiple fronts.
