Villarreal's perfect record against bottom-half sides shattered at Getafe
The Yellow Submarine sunk to their first defeat against non-European competition this season with a dismal display at the Coliseum.
A toothless Villarreal side saw their impressive unbeaten run against La Liga’s non-European competitors come to a crashing halt with a disappointing defeat at Getafe’s Coliseum.
End of an impressive streak
Marko Dmitrović’s men had previously maintained an impeccable record against teams not competing in European competitions this season. Until this weekend’s stumble, the Yellow Submarine had only tasted defeat against the Spanish heavyweights - Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atlético Madrid and Real Betis.
Getafe now join that exclusive club of teams who’ve managed to sink Villarreal this campaign, becoming the first non-European participant to do so. Talk about a proper bubble-burster for the lads from Castellón!
A performance to forget
After Monday’s victory against Espanyol, Villarreal supporters might’ve expected their team to build momentum. Instead, they witnessed what could be described as one of their worst performances of the season:
- Lacking any meaningful control in possession
- Resorting to ineffective direct play
- Creating precious few clear-cut opportunities
Coliseum curse returns
The defeat also ends another impressive Villarreal streak at the Coliseum, where they hadn’t lost since 2017. The stadium has typically been a happy hunting ground for the Yellow Submarine, but not on this occasion.
After this dismal showing, the Castellón outfit will need to have a proper look in the mirror before their next fixture. As we say in London, they were absolutely Brahms and Liszt from start to finish.
