Derby Day Drama: Comert's Flag Celebration Sparks Chaos at Levante

Valencia's Comert ignites post-match fury by planting his shirt on Levante's corner flag, leading to heated confrontations between players and staff after the 0-2 derby win.

Valencia’s Eray Comert turned a heated derby into absolute chaos with a provocative celebration that left Levante players and staff fuming after the final whistle.

Flag-gate Ignites Derby Tensions

With Valencia securing a comfortable 0-2 away victory, what should have been a straightforward post-match celebration descended into proper handbags when Swiss defender Comert decided to get creative with the corner flag.

In scenes you’d rarely see even in the rowdiest London derbies, Comert grabbed a corner flag, draped his Valencia shirt over it (covering Levante’s emblem), and paraded it toward the section housing the 400 traveling Valencia supporters - essentially claiming Levante’s “territory” as conquered.

Not exactly the brightest idea in a fixture already bubbling with tension, was it?

All Kicking Off

Levante players and staff weren’t having any of it:

  • Several Levante representatives immediately rushed toward Comert
  • Players including Sadiq and Iván Romero confronted Valencia players
  • Even Diakhaby attempted to play peacemaker (unsuccessfully)
  • A Levante staff member eventually snatched the flag back from Comert

The situation escalated further when bottles were thrown from the stands, with one reportedly striking Comert in the face as players headed for the tunnel.

Post-Match Reactions

Levante’s Manu Sánchez didn’t mince words about the incident: “You could have saved that… you’re in a stadium you should respect.”

Meanwhile, Levante captain Dela was caught on camera during a post-match interview with Movistar as the chaos unfolded behind him, visibly frustrated as he attempted to maintain composure while demanding respect.

Derby History

This isn’t the first time these Valencia rivals have clashed beyond the pitch. The previous meeting also ended with tension following an incident involving Hugo Duro.

While Valencia walked away with all three points, the lasting image of this derby won’t be the football - it’ll be the barney that broke out after Comert’s ill-advised flag antics. Not the best look for either side, but that’s derby day passion for you, innit?
