Pellegrini hails Abde's maturity as Betis edge closer to Champions League dream
The Chilean manager praises Abde's growth after Betis' crucial win at Mallorca, with the Verdiblancos now just four points behind Atlético and Villarreal.
Betis boss Manuel Pellegrini couldn’t hide his delight after his side’s massive result at Son Moix, putting them firmly in the hunt for Champions League football next season.
The Verdiblancos are now just four points off Atlético Madrid and Villarreal in the race for Europe’s top competition, while also creating daylight between themselves and the chasing pack for that coveted fifth spot.
Abde’s transformation impresses
Pellegrini was particularly chuffed with Abde’s performance, whose goal helped secure the vital three points against a Mallorca side that had been in decent nick themselves.
“He’s a player with tremendous ability who has matured enormously this past year,” Pellegrini noted about Abde’s development. The gaffer highlighted how the winger has significantly improved his goal output, transforming from a player who’d create chances without end product to a genuine goal threat.
What’s behind this evolution? According to the Chilean, it’s Abde’s willingness to listen and learn rather than being stubborn. The player’s openness to criticism and advice has been key to his growth, with Pellegrini emphasizing how he’s earned his spot through consistent graft in training.
Son Moix scrap
The match itself was proper nip and tuck, with Betis having to withstand some pressure after Mallorca pulled one back to make it 1-2. Despite the hosts dominating possession late on, Pellegrini’s men stayed focused and compact defensively.
The manager admitted his side started a bit too deep but gradually took control after hitting the woodwork early on. Betis created several dangerous counter-attacks that could have made the scoreline more comfortable before having to weather the storm in the closing stages.
Champions League ambitions
While keeping his feet on the ground, Pellegrini isn’t hiding Betis’ European ambitions:
“We’ll always have the ambition to go as high as possible. We try every time, but we shouldn’t confuse hope with reality,” he explained, acknowledging the quality of teams above them.
However, with Betis now cutting the gap to Atlético and Villarreal, the dream of Champions League football is very much alive. The Chilean is also targeting a deep run in the Europa League to cap what he considers “a great season” despite some cup disappointments.
Bakambu’s goal was another positive for Betis, with Pellegrini pleased to see the striker finding form after injury troubles.
