Sellés clarifies fan comments, channels Zapater's spirit in rallying cry

Real Zaragoza manager Rubén Sellés attempts to smooth over his post-match comments that ruffled feathers among supporters after the Cultural Leonesa match.

Bit of a mare for Rubén Sellés, who’s been forced to explain himself after his comments about Zaragoza supporters didn’t exactly go down a treat with the locals.

Walking back the comments

The Real Zaragoza gaffer found himself in hot water after suggesting fans needed to “take a step forward” following their recent match. Those comments went down like a lead balloon with the Zaragoza faithful, prompting today’s clarification.

Sellés cleverly invoked club legend Alberto Zapater’s famous quote that “Real Zaragoza will be what its people want it to be” - a smart move to get the supporters back onside.

“I had the feeling it was time to appeal to that union between the fans and the team,” Sellés explained, attempting to put out the fire he’d inadvertently started.

What he really meant

The manager was keen to stress that his call for a “step forward” was about:

  • Creating more energy in the stands
  • Showing solidarity with the players
  • Going all-in for the remaining 16 fixtures

“We can improve the atmosphere at the Ibercaja Estadio,” Sellés continued, doubling down on his point while trying to soften the blow. “I understood the message could cause some commotion, as it has, but I like to be clear and direct.”

Defending his players

Interestingly, Sellés also took a moment to shield his squad from criticism, suggesting that asking players for more after they’ve given everything isn’t the right approach.

“The team yesterday represents me,” he insisted, making it clear he stands behind their effort level despite results perhaps not being what everyone wants.

With Zaragoza struggling to find consistency in the Segunda División, Sellés is clearly trying to create a united front between supporters and squad for the final stretch of the season.

“The only alternative to get out of this situation is for us all to be together,” he concluded - a sentiment few would argue with, even if his delivery initially rubbed people up the wrong way.
