Suns snap up Highsmith: Miami's defensive specialist lands in Phoenix

Phoenix Suns have secured former Miami Heat defensive specialist Haywood Highsmith on a multi-year deal after his brief stint with the Brooklyn Nets came to an end.

Phoenix add much-needed defensive muscle to their roster as they push for playoff position in the Western Conference.

Defensive specialist joins Booker’s crew

The NBA transfer market continues to bubble away nicely, despite the official trade deadline passing on February 5th. Teams can still snap up free agents who’ve had their contracts terminated, and that’s exactly what the Phoenix Suns have done by securing Haywood Highsmith on a multi-year deal.

The 29-year-old forward, who spent four productive years with Miami Heat until summer 2025, has been picked up by Phoenix after being waived by the Brooklyn Nets without playing a single minute for them.

Miami pedigree

Highsmith built quite the reputation during his time in Miami, establishing himself as a proper defensive operator. His final season with the Heat showcased his ball-hawking abilities:

  • Averaged 1.5 steals per game in his last campaign
  • Not known for offensive production (6.5 points and 3.4 rebounds per game)
  • Gradually increased his role over four years in Miami

What the Suns are getting is a player who brings energy and defensive grit rather than scoring prowess - something every title-chasing team needs in their locker.

Playoff push reinforcement

This acquisition strengthens a Suns squad that’s currently:

  • Sitting 7th in the Western Conference (32-23 record)
  • Just 1.5 games behind Minnesota Timberwolves for direct playoff qualification

Booker and co. will be hoping Highsmith can provide the defensive steel needed for the business end of the season. It’s a proper shrewd bit of business if you ask me.

Injury concerns

The elephant in the room is Highsmith’s fitness. The Baltimore native underwent surgery for a torn meniscus in his right knee last August and hasn’t played a single minute of basketball since then.

Whether he can return to the defensive force he was at Miami remains the million-dollar question. If he can shake off the rust and get back to his best, Phoenix might’ve found themselves a right Bobby Dazzler for their playoff push.
