Amrabat steps up recovery - Betis star expected back in Seville this week
Moroccan midfielder Sofyan Amrabat is making significant progress in his recovery from ankle surgery and could return to Betis' training facilities within days.
Betis midfielder Sofyan Amrabat is nearing his return to Seville as he continues his rehabilitation from ankle surgery, with the club hoping to welcome him back to their training facilities by the end of this week or early next.
Three months on the sidelines
The Moroccan international has been out of action since late November when he suffered an ankle injury in a collision with former teammate Isco. After a brief and limited appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations, where he managed just two matches, Amrabat underwent surgery to properly address the problem.
Nearly three months after the operation, there’s finally light at the end of the tunnel for the midfield enforcer. He’s been sharing videos of his progress on social media, showing his gradual return to fitness with increasing workloads on the affected ankle.
Dutch recovery before Spanish return
Amrabat has been conducting the initial phase of his rehabilitation in the Netherlands, his native country. Once this stage is complete, he’ll jet back to Seville to continue his recovery at Betis’ Luis del Sol training complex under the watchful eyes of the club’s medical staff.
While the exact date of his return to Spain remains undecided, the club is optimistic he’ll be ready to progress to the next phase of his recovery either by the end of this week or early next week.
Pellegrini’s squad boost
The midfielder’s eventual return will provide a significant boost to Manuel Pellegrini’s options during the business end of the season. The Chilean gaffer has somehow kept Betis competitive despite an injury list that would give any manager the right hump:
- Amrabat himself
- Isco
- Héctor Bellerín
- Giovani Lo Celso
- Cucho Hernández
Pellegrini has worked minor miracles to keep his team in contention in both La Liga and the UEFA Europa League despite missing so many key players. Amrabat’s return will add much-needed steel to the Betis engine room as they push for European qualification.
