Barça face Girona in must-win clash with top spot on the line

The Blaugrana need victory to reclaim top spot from Madrid, while Michel's Girona seek crucial points to pull away from relegation trouble.

Barcelona head to Montilivi tonight with absolutely no room for error as they look to reclaim top spot in La Liga after Madrid temporarily pinched it on Saturday evening.

Pressure mounting on Flick

Hansi Flick’s lads are feeling the heat after that proper spanking from Atlético in the Copa. The German gaffer had never tasted defeat quite like that before, with his side putting in a shocker of a first-half display. This slow-starting malarkey has become a bit of a habit for Barça this season, and they simply can’t afford another dodgy opening tonight.

The stakes couldn’t be higher for the Catalans:

  • Copa del Rey hopes are all but brown bread (dead) without a historic comeback
  • Failure to reclaim top spot would set alarm bells ringing at Camp Nou
  • Barcelona faithful won’t take kindly to being behind a Madrid side that’s been constantly slated, changed managers mid-season, and got knocked out of the cup by a Segunda side

As they say in Catalunya (and London): it’s win or face the music.

Girona fighting their own battle

Michel’s Girona aren’t exactly sitting pretty themselves. They desperately need points to create some breathing space from the relegation scrap. Their defensive record has been a right mess this season - they’ve shipped 37 goals, making them the third-leakiest defence in La Liga behind only Sevilla (39) and Levante (38).

That said, they’ve shown some defensive improvements in 2026, and they’ll need to be rock solid tonight. History isn’t on their side though - they’ve only managed to nick one win from their last five home fixtures against Barcelona.

All eyes on the referee

Ref Soto Grado will be under the microscope tonight following the controversial handling of Barça’s Copa clash with Atlético. The Catalan club lodged a formal complaint with the Spanish FA, expressing their frustration at decisions they believe consistently go against them. Saturday’s penalty calls involving Vinícius at the Bernabéu have only added fuel to an already blazing fire.

Team news

Michel will be without Ter Stegen, Álex Moreno, Van de Beek and Ounahi, all sidelined through injury.

Flick receives a boost with Raphinha returning to the squad, but Rashford remains unavailable, joining the injured trio of Gavi, Christensen and Pedri on the sidelines.
