Camavinga opens up on those infamous 'grey sofa' chats with Ancelotti's coaching staff

Real Madrid's versatile midfielder Eduardo Camavinga gets candid about his positional struggles, need for improvement, and those dreaded coaching conversations.

Eduardo Camavinga has shown his lighter side in a refreshingly honest press conference, while revealing insights into Real Madrid’s infamous ‘grey sofa’ – where players get summoned for one-on-one chats with the coaching staff.

The Frenchman’s candid confessions

When asked if Madrid needed a new midfield organizer, the former Rennes man turned the tables on the journalist with a cheeky grin: “What do you think? Tell me what you think and I’ll respond.” When the journalist affirmed, Camavinga quipped: “I don’t think so. We have those types of players. But I’ll chat with the president anyway if you think we need one.”

It’s this kind of honesty that’s endeared him to the Madrid faithful, despite his struggles for consistent form this season.

The dreaded grey sofa

In what might be the most revealing part of the presser, Camavinga admitted to frequent visits to the notorious ‘grey sofa’ – apparently Madrid’s equivalent of being called to the headmaster’s office.

“I’ve been on that grey sofa many times. With Xabi and with Arbeloa. It’s like when you go to speak with your boss,” Camavinga revealed.

These coaching conversations with Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa have clearly been part of his development process at the Spanish giants, though one imagines they’re not always the most comfortable experiences for a young player.

Position and potential

The versatile midfielder addressed the recurring question about his best position, making it clear where he sees his future:

  • Believes he can play as Madrid’s midfield organizer (the ‘6’ role)
  • Admits we haven’t seen “the best Camavinga” yet
  • Identifies lack of consistency as his main weakness
  • Acknowledges he makes errors that need improvement

“I can give more and do better,” Camavinga stated, showing impressive self-awareness for a player still developing at the highest level.

With the Champions League knockout stages approaching, Madrid will need the Frenchman at his best if they’re to defend their European crown. Based on this press conference, at least his attitude seems spot on – even if he’s spent more time than he’d like on that bloomin’ grey sofa!
