Jauregizar injury concern for Athletic as medical tests loom
Athletic Club's key midfielder faces anxious wait after being forced off during Oviedo victory, with Valverde already facing selection headaches for Friday's clash with Elche.
Athletic midfielder undergoes medical tests to rule out bone injury after weekend knock
The lads at Athletic Club are in for a proper headache this week, with Jauregizar set for medical tests after picking up a knock that forced him off during their win against Oviedo.
Injury concerns mounting
While the rest of the squad reported to Lezama this morning for recovery training following their victory, the Bermeo-born midfielder was instead heading for the doc’s. Jauregizar, who’s been Valverde’s most-used outfield player this season, got himself on the scoresheet with the equaliser despite already being in the wars.
Interestingly, after initially receiving treatment and attempting to soldier on, he eventually had to throw in the towel and make way. The club’s medical team will now conduct imaging tests to rule out any bone damage from what Valverde described as “a fall, a bit of a knock” during an aerial challenge.
Selection nightmare brewing
Valverde’s got himself in a right two and eight for Friday’s home clash with Elche. Jauregizar’s participation looks highly doubtful, and to make matters worse, Galarreta is definitely out through suspension after accumulating too many bookings.
The gaffer’s midfield options are looking proper thin on the ground, and he’ll be desperate for some positive news from other quarters:
- Vivian could return after missing recent matches with a muscle injury and illness
- Berenguer’s persistent right toe problem remains a concern
- Nico continues to struggle with pubic bone issues requiring rest
Athletic will train Tuesday before preparing for Friday’s San Mamés showdown, where victory would match their early-season run of three consecutive wins.
