Madrid find their mojo without Mbappé as goals flow from all angles

Real Madrid's 4-1 thrashing of Real Sociedad proves they can thrive even when their French superstar is absent, with Gonzalo García and others stepping up.

Real Madrid delivered a statement performance against Real Sociedad, showing they have the firepower to excel even without their talismanic Frenchman.

Life beyond Kylian

For much of this season, the stats have told a worrying story at the Bernabéu. Before Sunday’s convincing 4-1 victory over Real Sociedad, Mbappé had accounted for a whopping 48% of Madrid’s goals. At certain points, that figure had even climbed above 56% - more than one in every two goals bearing his signature.

That’s gone from being a compliment to a concern. The question was never whether Mbappé is essential - he absolutely is and will remain so - but rather could the rest of the squad step up when he’s unavailable? With his dodgy knee already causing a few heart-in-mouth moments this season, it’s a question Arbeloa’s men needed to answer.

The supporting cast becomes the main event

Thankfully for the Madrid faithful, the response has come from multiple directions:

  • Gonzalo García has embraced the challenge most naturally. The academy product has maintained that rare hunger that many young strikers lose along the way. When Mbappé isn’t on the pitch, Gonzalo rolls up his sleeves and gets stuck in. He’s now bagged six goals in just 344 minutes played without the Frenchman this campaign.

  • Vinicius Júnior has stepped up to the plate when handed the captain’s armband.

  • Valverde and Rodrygo have both made crucial contributions when the team might otherwise have been pining for their top marksman - with the Uruguayan particularly impressive against La Real.

After Sunday’s performance, Mbappé’s goal contribution percentage has dropped slightly to 45%. Still significant, but the needle is moving in the right direction.

The man himself called it

Interestingly, Mbappé himself tried to defuse this debate months ago. After scoring four in a 4-3 win over Olympiacos and facing inevitable questions about Madrid’s dependence on him, he responded: “I don’t think like that. Every team has players with specific jobs, and mine is scoring goals.”

He was right all along, but his words needed backing up by his teammates’ actions. Now, finally, the collective is proving him correct in the most convincing fashion.

Arbeloa has spent a month building something that doesn’t yet have a definitive name, but certainly has form. The 4-1 victory was about more than just the scoreline - it showed a committed unit that doesn’t need any single individual to solve everything.
