Betis and Hummel unveil pioneering orange-infused kit to celebrate urban green spaces
Real Betis' latest sustainability initiative features a limited edition shirt made with orange fibers that actually releases orange blossom scent when scratched - to be worn against Rayo Vallecano.
Betis continue to lead the way in football’s environmental consciousness with a proper Bobby Dazzler of a kit that’s as innovative as it is meaningful.
Orange you glad Betis care about the environment?
Real Betis, through their environmental sustainability platform Forever Green, have unveiled a groundbreaking shirt partially manufactured from oranges. This pioneering kit aims to highlight the importance of urban green spaces and will be worn during their LaLiga matchday 25 clash with Rayo Vallecano.
The limited edition Hummel shirt goes beyond just looking good - it actually smells good too. The kit features perforated numbers inspired by orange peel texture that incorporate “scratch and sniff” technology. When scratched, these numbers release the scent of orange blossoms (azahar), an iconic symbol of Seville, using 100% chemical-free sustainable ink.
Technical marvel with environmental credentials
The shirt’s composition is a sustainability masterclass:
- 16.2% organic fiber obtained from orange peels
- 37.8% Lyocell (natural regenerated fibers from wood cellulose)
- 46% recycled polyester
This combination eliminates virgin plastic while creating a high-tech garment with soft, breathable and highly resistant fabric.
The color palette blends Betis’ corporate green with a darker tone inspired by orange tree leaves and “albero” - a distinctive Sevillian aesthetic color that forms the visual axis of the city’s historical heritage.
More than just a pretty shirt
Framed within the campaign ‘La vida en verde comienza en el barrio’ (Green life begins in the neighborhood), the initiative aims to raise awareness about the role trees - particularly orange trees - play in Seville’s urban landscape:
- Providing shade to streets and squares
- Helping mitigate the heat island effect
- Representing a cultural identity marker
- Serving as a fundamental pillar of natural drainage
Continuing Betis’ environmental commitment
This marks the fifth sustainability-focused match initiative from Betis since 2022, with each season highlighting a different environmental challenge. Previous campaigns have tackled recycling, responsible water management, and invasive algae species on Andalusian coasts.
With the UN projecting that 70% of the global population will live in cities by 2050 (up from 56% today), Betis are highlighting the strategic priority of protecting urban landscapes - especially trees - for their ability to create comfortable spaces and respond to the global climate crisis at the local level.
The iconic Plaza de Doña Elvira hosted the presentation this morning, with club legends Joaquín Sánchez and Rafael Gordillo participating in a symbolic moment where they lifted a child from Betis’ academy to retrieve the shirt from among the branches of one of the plaza’s traditional orange trees.
