From Boots to Bench: Simeone's 20-Year Journey Since Hanging Up His Boots

Two decades ago, Diego Simeone played his final professional match for Racing Club before immediately transitioning to his coaching career.

A tale of two Simeones - the player who bowed out exactly 20 years ago and the manager who’s become one of football’s most enduring figures.

The Final Whistle

On February 17, 2006, Diego ‘El Cholo’ Simeone stepped onto the pitch for Racing Club against Estudiantes in sweltering Argentinian summer heat. With his young sons in tow – Giovanni, Gianluca and little Giuliano in his arms – Simeone wore the captain’s armband and his trademark number 14 shirt one final time.

The match itself wasn’t a fairytale ending. Racing lost 2-1 with goals from José Sosa and Lugüercio for Estudiantes, while Pipa Estévez netted for Racing. But the result was almost immaterial – this was about a football legend closing one chapter to begin another.

Full Circle

There’s something poetic about Simeone ending his playing days at Racing Club. Despite starting his career with Vélez Sarsfield and becoming an Atlético Madrid icon:

  • Racing was the club he supported as a boy
  • He joined them after his second spell at Atlético Madrid in 2005
  • He played 38 matches and scored 3 goals for the Argentinian side

Hours before his final match, Simeone told MARCA: “I’m retiring with the shirt I fell in love with football in.” The significance wasn’t lost on anyone – even Argentina’s then-president Néstor Kirchner phoned him at the team hotel.

From Player to Gaffer

Simeone’s playing stats speak volumes:

  • 563 club appearances (Vélez, Pisa, Sevilla, Atlético, Inter, Lazio, and Racing)
  • 87 goals and 34 assists at club level
  • 106 caps for Argentina with 11 goals and 11 assists

But what’s most remarkable is that within 24 hours of hanging up his boots, Simeone began his transition to coaching. Talk about not letting the grass grow under your plates of meat!

Two Decades Later

Twenty years on from that sweltering afternoon in Argentina, Simeone’s coaching journey – particularly his transformative tenure at Atlético Madrid – deserves its own lengthy chapter. He’s gone from midfield enforcer to tactical mastermind, building a legacy that may eventually overshadow his considerable achievements as a player.

As they say in Buenos Aires, “veinte años no es nada” (twenty years is nothing) – but in football terms, Simeone’s two decades of evolution from player to coach represents an entire era of the sport’s history.
