Madrid stars rally around Vinicius Jr after alleged racist incident at Benfica
Real Madrid players speak out following claims of racist abuse directed at Vinicius Jr during Champions League victory at Benfica's Estádio da Luz.
Real Madrid players have come together in support of Vinicius Jr following allegations of racist abuse during their Champions League victory at Benfica’s Estádio da Luz.
Teammates speak out
Following Madrid’s important away win in the Champions League playoff first leg, both Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouaméni addressed the media about an incident involving Vinicius Jr and Benfica’s Prestianni.
Tchouaméni was particularly forthright, stating: “The truth is that this cannot happen.” The French midfielder revealed that according to the team, Prestianni allegedly called Vinicius a “monkey” while covering his mouth with his shirt.
The Madrid dressing room has closed ranks around their Brazilian star, with discussions apparently taking place about whether to continue the match. Tchouaméni explained that the team ultimately decided to play on after speaking with Vinicius and former player Álvaro Arbeloa, who is now part of the coaching staff.
Valverde expresses frustration
Valverde expressed frustration about the ongoing issue, noting that despite numerous cameras at modern football matches, such incidents still occur without clear evidence being captured.
“It’s unfortunate that with so many cameras, this couldn’t be recorded,” the Uruguayan midfielder said, adding that covering one’s mouth to say something raises obvious questions about intent.
Strong performance despite tension
Beyond the controversy, both players highlighted the team’s solid performance in a difficult atmosphere. Tchouaméni praised the squad’s solidarity, particularly noting how even attacking stars Vinicius and Mbappé contributed defensively.
The victory puts Madrid in a strong position ahead of the return leg at the Bernabéu, where they’ll look to secure progression to the next round of the Champions League.
While the exact nature of what was said remains disputed – with claims that different words may have been used – what’s clear is that Madrid’s players have unequivocally backed their teammate in what appears to be the latest in a string of incidents involving Vinicius Jr.
