Málaga's Funes fumes at officials after controversial calls in Anoeta defeat

Málaga CF left San Sebastián seething after several contentious refereeing decisions went against them in their clash with Real Sociedad B.

The boys from La Rosaleda have been left absolutely gutted after a string of dodgy decisions at Anoeta. Málaga’s gaffer Juanfran Funes couldn’t hide his frustration with referee Fuentes Molina following their match against Real Sociedad B.

Penalty shouts waved away

The Costa del Sol outfit had two strong penalty appeals dismissed:

  • On 50 minutes, with the score level at 1-1, Joaquín Muñoz went down in the box after a challenge from Beitia. The ref waved play on, believing the defender got a touch on the ball – replays suggest otherwise.

  • Later, Julen Lobete hit the deck following what appeared to be knee-to-knee contact with Jon Garro inside the area. Despite the contact looking sufficient for a review, VAR stayed silent.

Controversial goal stands

The real Adam and Eve came with Ochieng’s goal for Real Sociedad B. Following a corner, Gorka Carrera was clearly in an offside position and appeared to interfere with Málaga keeper Alfonso Herrero right before the ball went in. Despite protests, the goal stood.

Funes’ frustration boils over

Málaga’s manager didn’t mince his words post-match, though he tried to keep it brief: “If we start reviewing all the controversial decisions, we’d have to live here permanently.”

He pointed to multiple incidents including the interference on Alfonso during the goal, a foul on Larrubia that wasn’t given, and another situation involving Ochoa that somehow resulted in a yellow card for Málaga.

“We’ve been disadvantaged by many decisions,” Funes noted, while also acknowledging his team needs to demand more from themselves despite the officiating.

This defeat continues a frustrating run for Málaga, who’ve now had several matches where they feel the men in black have done them no favours. They’ll need to dust themselves down quickly as the promotion race in Segunda División waits for no one – not even teams feeling hard done by.
