The Great Madrid Sorpasso: How Los Blancos Reclaimed La Liga Summit
Former Madrid man Álvaro Benito breaks down the key factors behind Real Madrid's overtaking of Barcelona in the title race following Barça's slip-up against Girona.
Madrid have reclaimed top spot in La Liga after Barcelona’s defeat to Girona, with former Madridista Álvaro Benito offering his expert take on the power shift in Spanish football’s title race.
Eight on the trot
The capital club have been absolutely mustard lately, stringing together eight consecutive league victories while Barcelona have started showing cracks in their armour. Speaking on radio program ‘El Larguero’, Benito highlighted this impressive run as a key factor in Madrid’s ascendancy.
The former Madrid player, who was forced to hang up his boots in 2003 due to injuries, believes we’re sometimes too harsh on Los Blancos despite their consistent ability to grind out results when it matters.
Defensive contrasts
One of the most telling differences between the two Spanish giants right now is their defensive solidity:
- Madrid have rediscovered their defensive discipline under Arbeloa
- Barcelona’s backline woes have returned to haunt them
- The groundwork laid by Xabi Alonso’s defensive organization has been built upon
Championship DNA
Benito, now 49 and vocalist for rock band Pignoise when he’s not analyzing football, pointed to Madrid’s historical ability to cling on in competitions even during rough patches.
“A veces el nivel de los futbolistas te hace ganar aunque colectivamente el equipo no este bien,” Benito noted, highlighting Madrid’s knack for winning without necessarily playing champagne football.
The mental edge
Perhaps most crucially, the former midfielder believes the psychological advantage now lies firmly with Madrid. The title race has taken a right turn with this sorpasso (overtaking), and the mental boost for Madrid could prove decisive as we enter the business end of the season.
While Barcelona search for answers following their Catalan derby defeat, Madrid look increasingly comfortable in the driver’s seat - proving once again that writing them off is a mug’s game.
