Jordán slapped with two-match ban after touchline meltdown

Sevilla's Joan Jordán will miss crucial fixtures against Getafe and local rivals Betis after being sent off for protesting against officials during Alavés clash

Sevilla midfielder Joan Jordán has been handed a two-match suspension following his touchline antics during the recent clash with Deportivo Alavés.

Red mist descends

The Catalan midfielder, who wasn’t even on the pitch at the time, completely lost his head during extra time when an Alavés player took a throw-in several meters ahead of where the ball went out. Jordán, watching from the bench, was having none of it and rushed toward the assistant referee to make his feelings crystal clear.

Referee Iosu Galech promptly showed him a straight red card for what was described in the official match report as “leaving the technical area running towards assistant number 1, protesting ostentatiously with arms raised.”

Disciplinary hammer falls

The Spanish Football Federation’s Disciplinary Committee confirmed today that Jordán must serve:

  • Two matches on the sidelines
  • Financial penalties in accordance with Article 52

Unless Sevilla can successfully appeal the decision, the midfielder will be missing for two crucial fixtures:

  • Away trip to Getafe
  • The massive derby against cross-city rivals Betis

Limited playing time

Jordán has had a curious season for Sevilla after returning from a loan spell at - ironically enough - Alavés. He’s featured in just five matches this campaign, with most of his minutes coming in Copa del Rey rather than La Liga action, where he’s managed just 22 minutes on the park.

Despite his limited playing time, Jordán’s status at the club was evident when he captained the side during their recent victory over Athletic Club. Only Nemanja Gudelj has been with the first team longer than the 29-year-old midfielder.

The timing couldn’t be worse for Sevilla, who’ll now be without an experienced squad member for what promises to be a proper tear-up in the Seville derby.
