Terrats eyes long Espanyol stay as he finds his feet in midfield
Espanyol's Ramón Terrats opens up about his growing confidence, tactical freedom, and hopes for a lengthy future at the Catalan club despite a rocky start.
Rising midfielder Ramón Terrats has expressed his desire to remain at Espanyol long-term as he finally begins to find his rhythm at the Catalan club.
Finding his feet
After a challenging first half of the season with limited minutes, Terrats has emerged as one of the few bright spots in Espanyol’s recent rough patch. The midfielder has hit a purple patch of form, notching his first goal against Valencia and providing a crucial assist against Celta Vigo last Saturday.
“I’m very comfortable and happy here,” Terrats revealed. “I’ve found a young, energetic group that’s been easy to adapt to.”
The midfielder’s improved performances coincide with him finding greater tactical freedom under manager Manolo González:
- Playing as a “free man” within Espanyol’s structure
- Finding comfort zones on the pitch rather than rigid positioning
- Gaining confidence to demand the ball in build-up play
Home sweet home
Terrats’ connection to Espanyol runs deep, with the player considering the club his “home” – a sentiment that explains his commitment despite a turbulent January transfer window where his future appeared uncertain.
“I came to Espanyol because I consider it a very good opportunity for me,” Terrats explained. “I couldn’t let it pass because I never knew if I’d have the chance again. I decided to be at Espanyol because I trust I can sign here and stay for many years.”
Growing confidence
The midfielder’s early days at Espanyol weren’t plain sailing. Terrats admits he struggled initially with the pressure of playing for a club he’d dreamed of representing since childhood.
However, González’s faith has been crucial in his development:
- The manager personally called Terrats to outline his planned role
- González insisted Terrats would improve the squad
- The coach has now positioned him in zones where he feels most comfortable
“I’m more comfortable on the right so I can cut inside with my good foot,” Terrats explained about his positional preferences. “Now I often play on the left, but I try to move inside to receive and drive forward. I feel comfortable with this freedom to move and receive the ball anywhere on the pitch.”
Looking ahead
With Espanyol sitting on 35 points – a significant improvement on last season – Terrats remains focused on immediate challenges rather than long-term objectives, particularly with Atlético Madrid up next.
“It won’t be an easy match,” he acknowledged about the Atlético clash. “They have players of the highest level, but if we try to take the game where we want it, we can hurt them.”
For now, the midfielder is simply enjoying his football again and hoping to maintain his upward trajectory at a club he clearly holds dear.
