Vini Jr's fight against racism: Five convictions and counting

Real Madrid's Brazilian star continues to battle racist abuse, with five successful convictions in Spain highlighting the ongoing struggle against discrimination in football.

Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior has become the reluctant face of football’s fight against racism, with his experiences leading to five successful convictions in Spain – a small victory in an ongoing battle.

After reportedly suffering racist abuse from Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni during Tuesday’s Champions League clash, Vinicius finds himself yet again at the centre of a racism storm. But this time with a twist – it’s the first instance where he’s accused another player rather than fans.

The growing list of convictions

The Brazilian winger’s experiences have led to multiple legal victories against racist abusers:

  • June 2024: Three Valencia fans received eight-month prison sentences for racist abuse during a May 2023 match at Mestalla – Spain’s first-ever convictions for such incidents
  • July 2024: A person was sentenced to eight months in prison for racist comments against Vinicius and teammate Antonio Rüdiger in Marca’s comment section
  • October 2024: One-year prison sentence plus three-year stadium ban for a man who directed racist comments at Vinicius and Villarreal’s Samu Chukwueze at Son Moix Stadium
  • May 2025: Five individuals received one-year prison terms for racist abuse during a December 2022 match at Valladolid’s José Zorrilla Stadium
  • June 2025: Four members of Atlético Madrid’s “Frente Atlético” ultras group received 14-22 month sentences (converted to fines and stadium bans) for hanging an effigy of Vinicius before a Madrid derby

Player-to-player accusations rare

While fan abuse has been painfully common, player-to-player racism allegations remain rare in Spanish football. The most notable previous case involved Valencia’s Mouctar Diakhaby accusing Cádiz’s Juan Cala of racist language in 2021.

That complaint was ultimately archived due to insufficient evidence – the audio and video analysis couldn’t confirm the alleged slur, according to LaLiga’s investigation.

The Prestianni incident marks new territory for Vinicius, who’s become football’s most prominent anti-racism advocate through circumstances nobody would choose. The Brazilian has been forced to deal with more racist incidents than any player should have to bear.

For those of us who love the beautiful game, it’s proper disappointing that we’re still having these conversations in 2026. Five convictions show progress in the legal system’s response, but the fact these incidents keep happening proves Spanish football still has miles to go before it can claim to have its house in order.
