Chilavert's shocking rant: Ex-keeper launches homophobic tirade against Vinicius Jr

Former Paraguay goalkeeper José Luis Chilavert has sparked controversy with homophobic and racist comments defending Prestianni and attacking Vinicius Jr.

Former Real Zaragoza goalkeeper José Luis Chilavert has unleashed a shocking tirade filled with homophobic and racist rhetoric against Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr, while defending Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni in their ongoing racism row.

The controversy explained

The explosive comments from the 60-year-old Paraguayan come after Vinicius accused Prestianni of racial abuse during Real Madrid’s 1-0 Champions League victory over Benfica. Vinicius claims the Argentine called him a monkey multiple times during the match.

Rather than condemning racism, Chilavert has taken a different approach entirely, defending Prestianni while launching an extraordinary attack on Vinicius that’s left the football world gobsmacked.

Chilavert’s shocking statements

Speaking on Radio Rivadavia, the former goalkeeper claimed:

  • Vinicius was “the first to insult everyone” and provoked the incident
  • That modern football has become “effeminate” due to microphones and cameras
  • UEFA shouldn’t sanction Prestianni as it would make the “gay and lesbian community the example to follow”
  • All racist incidents in football “are born in Europe”

In a statement that defies belief, Chilavert referenced a Netflix documentary where Vinicius spoke about wanting better treatment for Black players, twisting this to suggest Vinicius was discriminating against white people.

Mbappé also targeted

The former Paraguay international didn’t stop at Vinicius. He also attacked Kylian Mbappé, who defended his Madrid teammate during the incident, with deeply transphobic comments regarding model Inés Rau, whom Mbappé was linked with in 2022.

This isn’t the first time Chilavert has had Vinicius in his sights. The keeper has been on the Brazilian’s case since 2024 with previous homophobic remarks.

What’s clear as day is that these comments from a former professional are well out of order and have no place in the beautiful game. Absolute dog’s dinner of a take from someone who should know better.
