The Álvaro connection: From youth team partners to Madrid's power duo
How Arbeloa and López, who first teamed up coaching Real Madrid's U14s, are now making waves at senior and youth levels respectively at the Bernabéu.
Former teammates who became coaching partners at youth level are now simultaneously leading Real Madrid’s first team and prestigious U19 squad, showing the club’s faith in promoting from within.
The Infantil A origins
Back in 2020, Álvaro Arbeloa took his first steps into coaching with Real Madrid’s U14 side (Infantil A), with Álvaro López serving as his assistant. The pair - affectionately known as ‘the Álvaros’ - proved a smashing combination, guiding their youngsters to league glory with an unbeaten record of 15 wins and 2 draws.
Though they parted ways professionally after that season, success has brought them back into Madrid’s spotlight - albeit in different roles.
Rapid rises through the ranks
Six years on from that initial partnership, both men have climbed the Madrid coaching ladder at breakneck speed:
- Arbeloa has reached the pinnacle as first-team manager in just his sixth season of coaching
- López has made the leap from U16s (Cadete A) to the strategically crucial U19s (Juvenil A) in just seven months
While Arbeloa battles for Champions League glory, López is pursuing the Youth League - Madrid’s commitment to excellence running through both competitions.
Current success stories
The pair’s relationship remains rock solid, with Arbeloa recently visiting the Juvenil A dressing room at the Di Stéfano stadium to motivate López’s lads before their Youth League clash with Marseille. The warm embrace between the coaches spoke volumes about their continued connection.
Arbeloa’s first-team tenure is gathering serious momentum with four consecutive victories:
- Three in La Liga (Rayo, Valencia and Real Sociedad) putting Madrid top of the table
- A crucial Champions League win against Benfica, taking a giant step towards the Round of 16
This winning streak strengthens Arbeloa’s position, bringing his overall record to seven wins and two defeats.
Meanwhile, López has been absolutely mustard with the U19s, winning six of his seven matches in charge. Like his former colleague, he boasts a perfect league record with victories over Burgos, Unionistas and Adarve cementing Madrid’s position at the summit. Having dispatched Marseille in the Youth League Round of 32, Chelsea await in the last 16.
For Real Madrid, this ‘Infantil A connection’ represents the perfect harmony between present success and future development - all in the family, as they say in the Spanish capital.
