Xeber Alkain Swaps Eibar for Ukrainian Adventure at Karpaty Lviv

SD Eibar have agreed a transfer fee with FK Karpaty Lviv for midfielder Xeber Alkain, ending his stint at Ipurua after 48 appearances.

SD Eibar have confirmed that Xeber Alkain is on his way out of Ipurua, with the Basque club reaching an agreement with Ukrainian side FK Karpaty Lviv for his transfer.

A move that raises a few eyebrows

Look, when you think about where a Segunda División player might end up mid-season, Ukraine isn’t exactly the first destination that springs to mind. But football’s a funny old game, innit, and Alkain is packing his bags for Lviv after what’s been a decent enough — if not exactly earth-shattering — spell in the Basque Country.

The ‘keeper-turned-outfield… actually no, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Alkain arrived at Eibar in the summer of 2024 from Deportivo Alavés, so he’s another player who’s done the rounds in northern Spain before this rather unexpected next chapter.

His time at Ipurua — by the numbers

He wasn’t exactly warming the bench the whole time, to be fair:

  • 48 official appearances in total during his time at the club
  • 47 of those in LaLiga Hypermotion — so he was very much a regular fixture in the second tier
  • 1 Copa del Rey outing to his name
  • 2,424 minutes spent in the azulgrana shirt — that’s a solid chunk of football, not just a cameo role

So whatever you think of the move, Alkain wasn’t just making up the numbers. He put the graft in.

What it means for Eibar

Eibar released a statement thanking Alkain for his commitment and professionalism — standard stuff, but it suggests the split is amicable rather than any sort of falling out. No drama, no beef, just a player moving on.

For Eibar themselves, this is a squad management call mid-season. They’re competing in LaLiga Hypermotion — Spain’s second division — and whether this departure leaves a gap that needs filling or simply frees up wages is the real question. The club haven’t announced any incoming business to replace him as yet.

Karpaty Lviv — a bit of context

For those not across the Ukrainian football scene (and honestly, fair enough), Karpaty Lviv are one of the more storied clubs in the country, based in western Ukraine. Given the ongoing war in Ukraine, the Ukrainian Premier League has been operating under extraordinary circumstances since 2022, with games played at neutral venues and the football world watching on with a mixture of admiration and concern. It’s a brave move from Alkain, and one that deserves a bit of respect.

All the best to him — it’s a different kind of pressure out there.
