Argentine journalist claims Julián Álvarez is Barcelona-bound for around €70m

An Argentine radio journalist is reporting that Julián Álvarez will leave Atlético Madrid for Barcelona, with Arsenal also credited with interest.

Reports out of Argentina are suggesting Julián Álvarez’s time at Atlético Madrid could be up — and that his next destination might just be the Camp Nou.

What’s being said?

Argentine journalist Hugo Balassone, speaking on Radio La Red, has come out with a fairly bold claim: that Álvarez is set to join Barcelona for somewhere in the region of €70 million. That’s not a whisper or a vague hint — Balassone was pretty direct about it, saying his information is that the Argentina striker will play for Barça.

He also mentioned Arsenal had shown interest at some point, which won’t surprise anyone who’s watched Álvarez’s performances this season. The lad’s quality is obvious.

So why would he leave Atlético?

According to Balassone, the crux of it is ambition. The argument goes:

  • Álvarez feels his career needs a club capable of winning major honours
  • His stint at the Metropolitano hasn’t gone the way anyone expected
  • The possibility of winning the Copa del Rey is there, but it’s not exactly the trajectory he had in mind when he left Man City
  • He wants to be at a club that can genuinely compete for titles — and right now, Atlético aren’t convincing him they’re that club

It’s a fair point, to be honest. When you leave the reigning Premier League champions, you’re not doing it to tread water in mid-table La Liga mediocrity. Álvarez is 25, in his prime, and clearly wants more.

The Barcelona angle

Barcelona, for all their well-documented financial headaches, have been quietly piecing things back together. If they can get a deal done for around €70m for a player of Álvarez’s calibre, that’s decent business — assuming their dodgy books can actually support it.

It’s worth noting this is one Argentine journalist’s claim on radio, not an official announcement or a transfer bombshell from a tier-one source. Take it with a pinch of salt, but don’t ignore it either — these things often start exactly like this.

The bigger picture for Atlético

This would be a proper blow for Diego Simeone’s side if it materialises. Álvarez was supposed to be the signing that took them to the next level. If he’s already mentally checked out after less than a full season, that raises serious questions about the project at the Metropolitano.

Atlético have the Copa del Rey to play for, but if their marquee forward is already eyeing the exit, it’s not exactly a great look going into the business end of the season.

One to watch, for sure.
