Quintero González to referee Real Madrid at Osasuna — the same ref from that chaotic Celta night
The Andalusian referee who oversaw Madrid's only home league defeat this season — and three red cards — is back for the Osasuna trip.
The appointment that’ll have the Bernabéu crowd muttering into their café solos: Quintero González is back in charge of a Real Madrid match, this time at El Sadar for the Osasuna fixture.
Cast your mind back to that Celta disaster
Quintero González was the man in the middle the last time Madrid lost at home in La Liga this season — a 0-2 defeat to Celta that descended into absolute carnage by the final whistle. Three red cards went the way of the Whites that evening:
- Fran García — shown his marching orders on the pitch
- Carreras — dismissed after apparently telling the referee “Eres malísimo” (you’re terrible), which, fair enough, probably wasn’t the smartest move
- Endrick — sent off from the bench, which is a special kind of chaos
Not a great night at the office, all things considered.
The tunnel chat that ended up in the match report
If the red cards weren’t enough drama, Quintero González also logged an incident with Dani Carvajal in the tunnel after the game. According to the official match report, Carvajal — already changed into his civvies — approached the referee and said: “El nivel que dais y llorando luego en rueda de prensa.” Essentially: you lot are rubbish, and then you go crying at press conferences. The kind of comment that gets you in trouble, and apparently it did make it into the official documentation.
Madrid TV didn’t exactly hold back either
The club’s own television channel went in hard on Quintero González after the Celta game, with some pretty spicy language thrown around in the post-match coverage. We won’t repeat all of it here, but it wasn’t exactly a glowing review of his performance. Safe to say the relationship between this particular referee and the Madrid camp is a bit… frosty.
The rest of the weekend’s refereeing appointments
For anyone keeping tabs on who’s running the rule over the other fixtures:
- Atlético de Madrid vs Espanyol — Alejandro Muñiz (Galician), with fellow Galician Javier Iglesias on VAR
- Real Sociedad vs Oviedo (14:00) — José Luis Munuera (Andalusian committee), Rubén Ávalos on VAR
- Betis vs Rayo Vallecano (16:15) — Juan Martínez (Valencian committee), Pablo González on VAR
What to expect at El Sadar
Osasuna away is never a walk in the park — it’s one of those grounds where the atmosphere gets proper feisty. Throw in a referee that Madrid’s camp clearly aren’t too chuffed about, and you’ve got the ingredients for another lively evening. Whether Quintero González has a point to prove or Madrid’s players manage to keep their heads — after that Celta night, you wouldn’t fancy betting either way.
One thing’s for sure: the Carvajal tunnel chat probably won’t be forgotten in a hurry.
