Álvaro García Becomes Rayo Vallecano's All-Time La Liga Appearance Record Holder
Álvaro García made history at La Cartuja, surpassing Cata's record to become Rayo Vallecano's most-capped player in La Liga with 198 appearances.
The 33-year-old winger from Utrera quietly went and made history on Saturday afternoon — and you suspect that suits him down to the ground.
The Record
Álvaro García is now officially Rayo Vallecano’s all-time record appearance maker in La Liga. Coming off the bench in the 61st minute to replace Fran Pérez during Rayo’s draw at La Cartuja, he ticked over to 198 Primera División appearances for the club, breaking the tie he previously shared with club legend Cata.
The names he’s left in his wake tell you everything about what this means at Vallecas:
- Ángel Luis Alcázar – 181 appearances
- Roberto Román ‘Tito’ – 170 appearances
- Roberto Trashorras – 170 appearances
These are proper Rayo icons, lads who gave their careers to the club. And now García sits above the lot of them. Eight seasons in, and he’s still going.
More Than Just Appearances
What makes this story even better is that the record isn’t the only one he’s broken this season. García is also Rayo’s all-time top scorer in La Liga — 29 goals in total with La Franja, which is genuinely remarkable for a wide player who’s spent most of his career at a club that’s been in and out of the top flight.
This campaign specifically, he’s been well useful across multiple fronts:
- 3 La Liga goals (level with Isi, though De Frutos’s 7 is the benchmark in the squad)
- Top assister in the league for Rayo
- His passes have generated 28 shots — more than any other player at the club
- In the Conference League, he’s directly contributed to 4 goals — again, more than anyone else in the squad
Humble as Ever
If you’re expecting García to be banging on about his own legacy, forget it. Speaking about the draw itself rather than his milestone, he kept it typically low-key: “Sumar fuera de casa siempre es bueno” — points away from home are always welcome, and every one matters given where Rayo currently sit.
He did open up slightly in a recent Radio MARCA tribute, admitting he’d never imagined becoming either the club’s top scorer or record appearance maker in the top flight. Debuting in Primera was already the dream. Everything since has been a bonus.
What It Means for Rayo
The draw at Seville keeps them ticking over in what García himself described as a “difficult situation” in the league. But there’s a sense of momentum returning — the team are competing hard regardless of the opponent, and with a clean run of weeks ahead before their next Conference League knockout tie, Rayo will be hoping to bank as many points as possible.
For now though, spare a thought for a proper one-club servant doing something genuinely special. Not bad for a lad who just wanted to play in Primera as a kid.
