Atlético vs Espanyol: Another Rollercoaster 'Final' at the Metropolitano

Atlético host Espanyol needing a big LaLiga response after their Champions League drama in Bruges. Can Simeone's side find consistency when it matters most?

Atlético de Madrid’s season has been one long white-knuckle ride — and this weekend’s home clash with Espanyol is yet another moment where Simeone’s side simply cannot afford to slip up.

The Rollercoaster That Never Stops

Koke basically summed it up himself after the Bruges match midweek — it’s been a mountain of a ride all season long. And he weren’t wrong. Think about it: Atleti have battered Betis in the Copa, hammered Eintracht, beaten Inter, and put five past Real Madrid in the derby. Brilliant stuff. But then they’ve gone and dropped points at Butarque, at Levante, at Mendizorroza, at Son Moix. The same team, completely different animal depending on the day.

That Bruges game was the perfect encapsulation — two goals up before half-time, then 3-3 by the 89th minute. Proper heart-in-mouth stuff.

What Espanyol Know All Too Well

Here’s the thing — Espanyol have already seen both sides of Atleti up close this season. Back in Cornellà, Simeone’s lot served up a dream first 60 minutes, with a worldie from Julián and some genuinely slick football. Then, after Baena’s injury, they completely fell apart in the last quarter of an hour, conceding twice and losing a game they had absolutely no business losing.

Espanyol will fancy their chances of exploiting that same unpredictability again. They proved that win was no fluke — 24 games on, they’re still a decent side. The problem for them is that 2026 has been absolutely diabolical form-wise:

  • Zero wins in the new year
  • Just two points from a possible 21 in their last seven games
  • Desperately need something to kick-start their season

They’re still within touching distance of Conference League football, and a proper run could even put them in the mix for the Europa League spots, with Betis six points above them. But they need to start winning again, sharpish.

The Bigger Picture for Atleti

For Simeone’s side, the LaLiga table is starting to demand attention. Villarreal have nipped three points clear in third, and Betis are sniffing around in fifth — potentially just a point behind Atleti if they beat Rayo before kick-off. The margins are getting tight.

And the fixture list isn’t doing them any favours:

  • Tuesday: Bruges at the Metropolitano — Champions League last 16, second leg
  • Eight days later: Camp Nou — Copa del Rey semi-final second leg, chasing a first Copa final in 13 years

With all that on the horizon, Simeone needs to manage his squad carefully. But the non-negotiable — the thing that’s happened every single season under the Argentine — is securing Champions League football for next year. That’s the baseline. Everything else is a bonus.

This one’s got banana skin written all over it. Atleti at their best? Unplayable. Atleti on an off day? Anyone can nick something. Espanyol will be well aware of that.
