Mario Martín beats the clock to make Getafe squad for Sevilla clash
The Real Madrid loanee was facing up to four weeks out with a grade-two ankle sprain, but has recovered ahead of schedule to feature against Sevilla.
The Real Madrid loanee has made a surprisingly swift recovery from a grade-two ankle sprain, putting himself back in the frame just a fortnight after picking up the injury.
The big news: Mario Martín is back
When Mario Martín hobbled off a couple of weeks ago with what was diagnosed as a grade-two sprain, the general expectation was three to four weeks on the sidelines. Bordalás was going to have to do without one of his most important midfielders for a fair chunk of the run-in. As it turns out, the lad’s had other ideas.
- Martín trained fully with the group this week and has made Getafe’s squad for Sunday’s home game against Sevilla at the Coliseum
- He’s unlikely to start — Djené is expected to slot back into the middle of the park after a strong showing against Villarreal
- But if the game needs something different, Bordalás now has the option to throw him on
It’s a proper boost. Martín has been central to how Getafe tick this season, and having him available even from the bench changes the dynamic of the squad considerably.
Who’s in, who’s out
It’s not all good news, mind. There are a couple of notable absentees from the squad:
- Borja Mayoral trained with the group during the week but hasn’t made the cut. The expectation is he’ll be back in contention for the trip to the Bernabéu
- Juanmi also misses out, joining the longer-term absentees Davinchi and Abu Kamara on the treatment table
The full squad
Bordalás has named the following 20 players:
David Soria, Jiri Letacek, Djené, Abdel Abqar, Luis Milla, Mario Martín, Arambarri, Satriano, Nyom, Javi Muñoz, Sebas Boselli, Diego Rico, Kiko Femenía, Luis Vázquez, Birma, Juan Iglesias, Domingos Duarte, Adrián Liso, Zaid Romero, Adri Riquelme.
What to expect on Sunday
Getafe hosting Sevilla is never a straightforward afternoon’s football — Bordalás sides don’t really do straightforward. With Djené expected to anchor the midfield and Martín potentially coming off the bench, there’s a bit of depth there that Getafe fans will be relieved to see. Whether Sevilla can cope with the usual Coliseum atmosphere is another matter entirely.
The Borja Mayoral situation is one to keep an eye on too. If he’s genuinely close to full fitness, having him available for the Bernabéu fixture would be a proper result.
