Barcelona Need a Historic Comeback Against Atlético — Can Camp Nou Work Its Magic?
Atlético thrashed Barça 4-0 in the Copa del Rey semi-final first leg. Can Barcelona pull off one of football's great comebacks at Camp Nou on 3 March?
Barcelona face an absolutely monumental task in the Copa del Rey after getting absolutely battered in the first leg. This is as steep a hill as you’ll find in football.
What Happened in the First Leg
On 12 February, Atlético de Madrid were absolutely ruthless at the Metropolitano — and that’s putting it mildly. Simeone’s side dismantled Barça 4-0 in what was a genuinely stunning first-half display. The goals came from an Eric García own goal, plus strikes from Griezmann, Lookman, and Julián Álvarez. By half-time, the tie was essentially done and dusted.
Atlético had one foot and most of their leg in the final before the second 45 minutes had even kicked off. Proper roll-out-the-barrel stuff.
The Scale of the Task
Let’s not sugarcoat it — a four-goal deficit is an enormous ask for anyone, let alone a Barça side that’s been inconsistent this season. To give you a sense of how rare this sort of turnaround is:
- Last season, Atlético drew 4-4 at Montjuïc in the Copa del Rey semi-final first leg — and still went out
- In 2022-23, Barça themselves were on the receiving end of a 0-4 Copa del Rey semi-final hammering — by Real Madrid, no less
History, then, is not exactly on the blaugrana’s side here.
Why Camp Nou Still Matters
For all the doom and gloom, there’s a reason Barcelona are pointing to the Camp Nou return leg on 3 March as their lifeline. The stadium — still in the process of its grand renovation — has a way of lifting the crowd and the players together. If Barça can get an early goal and the place goes mental, stranger things have happened in football.
But four goals? Against a Simeone defence? That’s not just a mountain, that’s Everest in flip-flops.
The Verdict
Atlético are nailed-on favourites to reach the Copa del Rey final, and rightly so. Their first-leg performance was the sort of display that reminds you why Simeone remains one of the best tacticians in world football. Barça will give it a go at home — they almost have to — but realistically, the rojiblancos are already planning their final.
Still, if you fancy witnessing either a historic comeback or Atlético sealing the deal in person, tickets for the Camp Nou second leg are still available — though they’re going fast.
