Betis Stumble at Home Before Seville Derby as Champions League Spots Drift Away

Real Betis dropped points against Rayo Vallecano in a frustrating home draw, leaving them six points off the Champions League places ahead of the Seville derby.

A proper unexpected speed bump for Betis — drawing at home to Rayo right before the Seville derby is not what Manuel Pellegrini had in mind this weekend.

Not the Warm-Up You’d Want

Look, Betis have been ticking along nicely — three consecutive La Liga wins had things looking rosy in Seville. So dropping points at home to a side from the lower reaches of the table feels like a bit of a kick in the teeth, especially with the derby looming large next Sunday at La Cartuja.

The verdiblancos never really got a grip on the game. Even going ahead in the match didn’t settle things down the way you’d expect from a Pellegrini side at home. Iñigo Pérez’s Rayo were lively, organised, and frankly gave Betis a proper game — at times it looked like the visitors might nick it altogether.

There was also a pretty glaring VAR moment that had the Betis faithful fuming:

  • Mendy’s challenge on Cucho Hernández right after half-time looked nailed-on for a penalty and a second yellow
  • Instead, after a VAR review, it was given as a free kick outside the box — no card
  • Difficult to explain, honestly

Whether that would’ve changed the outcome entirely is debatable, but it certainly didn’t help the mood inside the ground.

Where Does This Leave Them in the Table?

The dropped points have real consequences:

  • Champions League places are now six points away — that gap is starting to look uncomfortable
  • Betis sit fifth, and their cushion over Espanyol has stretched to seven points
  • However, if Giraldez’s side win their match, sixth place could close to within five points of Betis
  • They’re waiting on the Celta vs Mallorca result to get the full picture from the weekend

Derby Week Headaches

As if the result wasn’t frustrating enough, Pellegrini is heading into the Seville derby with a few selection problems on his hands:

  • Valentín Gómez is suspended — picked up his fifth yellow of the season and will sit out
  • Ruibal is a doubt with a muscle issue
  • None of the existing injury absentees are expected back in time

Not ideal preparation, is it.

A Brutal March Ahead

Win or lose on Sunday, Betis don’t get a breather. Their March schedule is genuinely hectic:

  • The Seville derby at La Cartuja
  • A trip to Getafe
  • Hosting Celta — a direct rival for European spots
  • A UEFA Europa League last-16 tie (opponents confirmed, date to come)

Four massive games before the international break. Betis need to be in the Champions League conversation, secure that fifth-place finish (which could carry Champions League qualification depending on how things shake out), and go deep in Europe. That’s a lot of plates to keep spinning — and leaving points at home against mid-table sides makes all of that considerably harder.

Today was a reminder that complacency at the Benito Villamarín is a luxury they simply can’t afford.
