Djené sees red as Getafe fall to Sevilla — and the headaches are just beginning
Getafe lost to Sevilla after Djené's early red card left them with ten men. The Togolese defender now faces a suspension that could rule him out of key fixtures.
Getafe’s trip to face Sevilla was always going to be a tough one, but it got a whole lot harder inside the first half-hour when Djené was shown a straight red card, leaving Bordalás’s side to battle on with ten men for the vast majority of the match.
What happened on the pitch
The Togolese centre-back was dismissed on 25 minutes following a heavy challenge on Suazo — not the sort of afternoon you want when you’re already fighting for every point in La Liga. To their credit, Getafe dug in and Satriano actually pulled them level late on, which was no small feat with a man down. But it wasn’t enough. Sevilla nicked it and the three points headed back to the Sánchez-Pizjuán.
Not ideal, but not a catastrophe in isolation. The real problem is what comes next.
The suspension worry
Because Djené’s red was a straight one — not a second yellow — there’s genuine concern at the club that he could be hit with a two-match ban rather than the standard one-game suspension. If that’s the case, here’s what the fixture list looks like:
- Monday 2 March — Real Madrid away at the Bernabéu (already confirmed he’ll miss this)
- Betis — potentially the following fixture, which could also be wiped out if the two-game ban lands
Missing a trip to the Bernabéu is painful enough. Potentially losing your first-choice centre-back for two games on the bounce, including a derby-ish clash with Betis, is a proper headache for Bordalás.
Silver lining: Birma gets his moment
Not everything was doom and gloom, mind. Serbian midfielder Birma finally got off the bench and made his Getafe debut, having been in the squad for three matchdays without getting a look-in. Thrown on in difficult circumstances — ten men, chasing the game — he showed enough to suggest he’s ready to contribute. Getting your first La Liga minutes in that sort of scenario is a proper baptism of fire, but by all accounts he handled it reasonably well and will be better for the experience.
It’s not exactly the debut story you’d write for him, but at least Getafe fans now know what they’ve got.
The bigger picture
Getafe remain in a precarious spot in the table, and losing Djené — even temporarily — is a blow they could do without. The Bernabéu is already a daunting fixture without being a man short in central defence before you’ve even kicked off. Bordalás will be hoping the disciplinary committee show some leniency, but given the nature of the challenge, he probably shouldn’t bank on it.
One to watch when the suspension ruling comes through.
