Lamine Yamal's Substitution Strop — And Flick's Pointed Response
Lamine Yamal looked well unhappy when Flick hooked him in the 88th minute against Levante. Here's what it means and how his boss responded.
Lamine Yamal wasn’t at his best against Levante — and when Hansi Flick pulled him off with two minutes left, the teenager made absolutely no attempt to hide how he felt about it.
Not His Night
It’s fair to say Yamal had one of those evenings where nothing quite clicked. He was erratic in patches, rarely beat his man with the directness we’ve come to expect, and had no involvement in any of Barcelona’s goals — which, if you’ve watched him this season, you’ll know is pretty unusual. By the time Flick decided to give him the hook in the 88th minute, bringing on Roony in his place, the job was already done. But that didn’t make the substitution any easier to swallow for the 17-year-old.
The Look on His Face Said It All
There were no dramatic gestures, no words exchanged, no proper scene. But his expression walking off? Couldn’t have been clearer if he’d written it on a placard. Anyone who follows Barça will recognise this — it’s not the first time Lamine has worn his feelings on his sleeve when subbed off early:
- Against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League, he was taken off in the 89th minute and was visibly fuming on the bench
- The Levante reaction was cut from the same cloth — no outburst, but that face said plenty
Flick’s Message, Loud and Clear
Flick, to his credit, addressed it head-on in his post-match press conference. Without calling anyone out directly, the German made his position crystal clear: “We have players who deserve to play, like Roony. He is a very professional footballer and when he has come on he has played well. I focus on that.”
Translation: everyone earns their minutes here. Even the golden boy.
Context Is Everything
To be fair to Lamine, he’s not exactly been sitting around doing nothing this season. A few bits of perspective:
- He’s the fourth-highest minute-earner at Barcelona this season with 2,671 minutes, behind only Koundé, Cubarsí and Eric García
- He’s been subbed off in 7 of his 21 La Liga appearances and 3 of his 6 Champions League games
- In Copa del Rey and the Supercopa, he’s come through every appearance without being replaced
So it’s not like Flick’s been rotating him heavily — the lad plays a serious amount of football. But when you’re 17 and the world is at your plates, sitting down early with the game won already probably still stings.
The Bigger Picture
This is a tiny moment in what’s been a remarkable season for Yamal. But Flick’s public response is worth noting — he’s clearly not going to make exceptions, even for his most gifted player. That kind of man-management could be exactly what keeps Lamine grounded as the hype around him continues to grow. A bit of healthy frustration never hurt anyone.
